Looking at FIDE statutes and chess rules handbook, the earliest reference to such recommendation is 2022. Both in Yugoslavia and Soviet Union, strong chess countries, Staunton chess sets were not popular due to their Christianized design. It is likely Staunton sets gained popularity after 1991 with the collapse of socialist regimes. undo Tag: Visual edit

In my research on the statutes of FIDE in 1924, there is no such official remark regarding Staunton chess set in the FIDE rules of chess. Staunton chess set, in its original and current popular form, is a Christianized chess set with the cross on top of the king and the bishop's obvious mitre top, so it lacks the universal approach required of a chess set to be used in official play across all countries in FIDE tournaments Tag: Visual edit
