Since Māori did in fact come to New Zealand from the Pacific Islands, calling the story of their having come from an island "mythical" seems to be overstating the case. The name "Hawaiki" is cognate with "Savai'i", which is a very real island which the ancestors of Māori did indeed, at one point in their history, live on and around.
