LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Alyssa Newton is an award-winning photojournalist and multimedia storyteller at WHAS11. She came to Louisville in April 2021 and was made WHAS's senior photojournalist in August 2022.

Alyssa has a background in television, radio, sports and print, coming to the Commonwealth from the beaches of the Gulf Coast. Her last stop was the Sun Herald newspaper in Biloxi, Mississippi as a multimedia journalist covering everything from politics and hurricanes to gas station food. She won multiple Mississippi Press Association awards in her time there, including Photo of the Year in 2021 -- the first female photographer to win the honor in over a decade in Mississippi.

Alyssa was born and raised in Dothan, Alabama and graduated from the University of South Alabama in 2017. She worked at the first FM all-sports station, WNSP, and as an assistant sports information director for the South Alabama Jaguars Athletic Department before starting her journalism career at NBC 15 in Mobile, Alabama.

Since starting her career in Alabama, Alyssa has won multiple awards including being honored by the Alabama Press Association, Mississippi Press Association and the Louisville Society of Professional Journalists. She won her first Emmy in 2023 for a series of stories for WHAS11 on the boy found in a suitcase in Southern Indiana.

Since joining WHAS11, Alyssa has found a passion telling stories with the talented staff of reporters and anchors at WHAS11, including shooting high school football and UofL sports any chance she gets. She takes pride in telling powerful visual stories and working on projects, like The Road to Reform with Isaiah Kim-Martinez. She's also a board member for the Louisville SPJ ensuring that photojournalists have a voice at the table in Louisville media.

When Alyssa isn’t telling stories, she loves to take photos, lay by the pool, find new foodie spots or just relax at home with her cats — Trojan, Luna and Biscuit.
