Westminster University has been accused of hypocrisy after inviting an Islamist preacher to speak.

Sheikh Haitham al-Haddad, who has condemned homosexuality and ordered the West to be just towards Hamas, was asked to speak at the London institution by its Islamic Society on November 4.

The university has been a part of Stonewall’s Diversity Champions programme since 2011 and some students believe that its anti-homophobia stance is incompatible with Mr al-Haddad’s homophobic views.

The Islamist leader, who was banned from speaking at London Metropolitan University and the London School of Economics last year, wrote an article for the online magazine Islam21C in which he said society should stand up to “the scourge of homosexuality” because it is a “criminal act” that must be opposed.
