#WorldTheatreDay: A Beacon of Hope in a Divided World? The World Needs Healing: Can Theatre & Plays #FixTheWorld?

Welcome to issue no. 51 of the #FixTheWorld or #GiveUp newsletter.

I'm Gareth Wong, and while I may not possess extraordinary talents, I do have a fond memory from my teenage years in Hong Kong. Picture me, a spotty teenager, harbouring dreams of becoming a singer—inspired not by the polished productions of Simon Cowell's era but by the raw passion of Jacky Cheung's early competitions.

Yes, I confess, my renditions were (& still) probably off-key, but dreaming was worth it, wasn't it? After all, I can still belt out those tunes if pushed!

In this edition, I invite you to join me in celebrating World Theatre Week. Let's explore how we can empower everyone to engage with theater in their own unique way. Together, we'll delve into the intricacies of the art form, discuss relevant issues, delve into research findings, and learn from the successes of others.

Everyday could be a theatre day!

Now, let me share a tidbit I've been preaching to anyone who'd listen: How can you avoid falling victim to scalpers and ticket touts in 2024? Embrace the digital age and turn to platforms like TodayTix Group (TTG). Kudos to Merritt Baer and Brian Fenty for pioneering a solution that protect people. In an industry dominated by giants like Ticketmaster, TTG's innovative approach for the theatre market, offering a haven for enthusiasts to purchase tickets at fair prices almost directly with the theatres. While I've yet to snag coveted Hamilton tickets (did go to may others!), I find solace in watching, listening, and attempting to sing along with the original cast on Disney+ as I tackle chores (whilst embracing discomfort/ standing on one leg).

So, without further ado, let's embark on our mission to #FixTheWorld.4Good.Space. I encourage you to peruse this article and consider joining this week's challenge. Are you up for it?

ART IS PEACE (or it should ONLY be) by Dalle3

It's 2024, and our world is being driven apart by the pernicious forces of social media algorithms that maximize engagement through shocking, divisive, and anger-inducing content. In this age of "angry-entertainment," it's all too easy to get swept up in the maelstrom of polarisation and lose sight of our shared humanity.

But there is a beacon of hope, a time-honoured tradition that has the power to bring people together, to foster empathy and understanding, and to celebrate the richness of our diverse cultures: theatre.

As we approach World Theatre Week, it's time to pause, take stock, and appreciate the transformative potential of this art form. Theatre has the capacity to transcend boundaries, to bridge divides, and to remind us of the universal truths that bind us together as a global community.

Transformative power of theatre in public place by Dalle3

The Transformative Power of Theatre

Theatre is not just entertainment; it is a catalyst for positive change, a mirror reflecting the complexities of the human experience. From the ancient Greek tragedies to the groundbreaking works of Lin-Manuel Miranda, theatre has always been a medium for exploring the depths of the human condition, for grappling with the thorniest societal issues, and for igniting conversations that challenge our perceptions and broaden our horizons.

Consider the phenomenon of "Hamilton," Miranda's tour de force that took the theatre world by storm. While it may have taken him a year or two to create the musical, it was truly a lifetime's work – a distillation of Ron Chernow's meticulous research, combined with Miranda's relentless pursuit of capturing the essence of Hamilton's life. And in a bold move that defied convention, Miranda ensured that the show's cast was predominantly comprised of ethnic minorities, challenging the traditional whitewashing of history and amplifying voices that had long been marginalised.

Why not integrate real-life research and get people to 'insource' their health (add simple tips of movement, nutritions into your plays!) learn from great Prof m.c. schraefel

Cohesive Live Performance by Dalle3

The Cohesive Impact of Live Performance

But theatre's power extends far beyond the confines of the stage. Live performance has a unique ability to cultivate social cohesion and foster a sense of community. When we gather in a shared space, united by the collective experience of witnessing a story unfold, we are reminded of our interconnectedness – our shared hopes, fears, and desires that transcend superficial differences.

Create your own Full Monty with clothes on?

Especially if you form the group that are putting on the theatre show together! Like Full Monty but with clothes on!

Numerous studies have demonstrated the profound impact of attending live theatre on empathy and pro-social behavior. The act of immersing ourselves in the lives of characters from diverse backgrounds and perspectives expands our capacity for understanding and compassion. We leave the theatre with a renewed appreciation for the complexities of the human experience, and a heightened sense of our shared humanity.

Digital Theatre on stage by Dalle3

Digital Theatre - Expanding Access

In the digital age, theatre's reach has extended far beyond the physical realm. Thanks to streaming platforms and online archives, audiences around the globe can now access world-class performances from the comfort of their own homes. This democratization of theatre has opened up new avenues for cultural exchange, enabling people from all walks of life to explore and engage with diverse stories and artistic traditions.

Community Theatre by Dalle3 (Not the Mural but the few people on the entrance to a grand hall)

Community Theatre - A Grassroots Movement

But theatre's power extends far beyond the bright lights of Broadway and the silver screens of streaming services. At its core, theatre is a grassroots movement, a celebration of community and shared creative expression.

From small-town playhouses to school auditoria, community theatre groups are sprouting up everywhere (if not, it should be!), providing a space for people to come together, to collaborate, and to explore the boundless realms of their imaginations.

These local initiatives not only nurture artistic talent but also foster a sense of belonging and collective pride. They serve as vibrant hubs for cultural exchange, where diverse stories and traditions are woven together into a tapestry that reflects the rich mix of our communities that form our world.

Educating young minds in Theatre by Dalle3

Educational Theatre - Igniting Young Minds

Perhaps nowhere is the transformative power of theatre more evident than in the realm of education. From elementary school plays to university drama programs, theatre has the ability to ignite young minds, to cultivate empathy and critical thinking, and to instill a lifelong love for the arts.

Through the process of bringing characters to life, students develop a deeper understanding of diverse perspectives, cultures, and worldviews. They learn to navigate complex emotions, to collaborate with their peers, and to express themselves in profoundly meaningful ways. These skills are not only invaluable for personal growth but also lay the foundation for a more compassionate, inclusive, and socially responsible society.

Diverse Storytelling by Dalle3

Diverse Storytelling Through Theatre

In a world that has long been dominated by a narrow range of narratives and perspectives, theatre offers a powerful platform for amplifying diverse voices and shattering stereotypes. From plays that explore the experiences of marginalized communities to those that challenge traditional gender norms, theatre has the ability to shine a light on the richness and complexity of our shared human experience.

By embracing diverse storytelling, theatre not only reflects the fantastic motifs of our societies but also serves as a catalyst for positive social change (unite rather than divide). It invites us to step outside our comfort zones, to confront our biases, and to engage in meaningful dialogues that can transform attitudes and foster greater understanding.

Theatre Activism by Dalle3

Theatre as Activism and Social Commentary

Throughout history, theatre has been a powerful tool for social commentary and activism. From the biting satires of Aristophanes to the searing indictments of racism in Lorraine Hansberry's "A Raisin in the Sun," theatre has given voice to the voiceless, challenged oppressive systems, and inspired audiences to take action for a more just and equitable world.

In the contemporary era, theatre continues to serve as a powerful medium for addressing pressing social issues, from climate change to systemic racism to gender-based violence. Through powerful storytelling and thought-provoking performances, theatre has the ability to spark conversations, raise awareness, and galvanize movements for positive change.

Therapeutic Theatre by Dalle3

The Therapeutic Benefits of Theatre

Beyond its social and political impact, theatre also holds profound therapeutic potential. Across the globe, theatre is being used as a tool for healing, self-expression, and personal growth. From drama therapy programs for individuals grappling with mental health challenges to community-based initiatives that use theatre to address trauma and promote resilience, the power of this art form to transform lives is undeniable.

By creating a safe space for vulnerability and self-exploration, theatre allows individuals to confront their inner demons, to process complex emotions, and to find their authentic voices. It fosters a sense of empowerment and self-confidence, and cultivates essential life skills such as empathy, communication, and collaboration.

Bridging culture through International Theatre by Dalle3

Bridging Cultures Through International Theatre

In an increasingly interconnected world, theatre serves as a powerful bridge between cultures, fostering cross-cultural understanding and celebrating the rich nourishing cauldron of global artistic traditions. International theatre festivals and exchanges provide a platform for artists from diverse backgrounds to come together, to share their stories, and to learn from one another.

Through these cross-cultural encounters, audiences are exposed to new perspectives, new modes of storytelling, and new artistic forms. They are invited to step outside their cultural bubbles and to embark on a journey of discovery, one that challenges preconceptions and broadens horizons.

#FixTheWorld Theatre Challenge by Dalle3

Your #FixTheWorld Theatre Challenge

As we celebrate World Theatre Week, let us embrace the power of theatre to bring people together, to foster empathy and understanding, and to inspire positive social change. Let us challenge ourselves to engage with this transformative art form in all its diverse manifestations.

Attend a local theatre production and immerse yourself in the stories of your community. Stream a performance from a culture or tradition that is unfamiliar to you, and allow yourself to be transported to new realms of understanding. Better yet, gather a group of friends or family members and create your own micro play, exploring themes that resonate with your shared experiences and aspirations.

For those with the means and opportunity, consider supporting theatre initiatives that prioritize diversity, inclusivity, and social impact. Invest in programs that amplify marginalized voices, challenge systemic injustices, and promote cultural exchange.

And for all of us, let us commit to being active participants in the theatre experience, to engaging with the stories and characters we encounter with open hearts and minds. Let us embrace the discomfort that comes with confronting our biases and preconceptions, for it is through this discomfort that true growth and transformation can occur.

In a world that often seems intent on dividing us, theatre has the power to bring us together, to remind us of our shared humanity, and to ignite the spark of hope that can illuminate the path towards a more just, compassionate, and unified world.

So, let us embrace the transformative power of theatre, let us celebrate the rich tapestry of stories that reflect the diversity of our global community, and let us use this art form as a catalyst for positive change.

Together, through the magic of theatre, we can, should & MUST #FixTheWorld.

My only ask is, to pass this challenge to 3 of your trusted contacts ideally through offline means whilst you visit the play/theatre, and if not, pass on FixTheWorld.4Good.Space
