The Fredericton Fire Department was founded in 1817 making it among one of the oldest established departments in the country. The Town of Marysville and Villages of Barkers Point and Nashwaaksis became part of the City of Fredericton in 1973, amalgamating the Barkers Point Fire Department, Marysville Fire Department and Nashwaaksis Fire Department with the FFD.

The Fredericton Fire Department is well known for its famous horses Bill and Doll who were the last fire horses in service in Country. Fredericton was also the first city in Canada and second in North America (Chicago) to recognize the value and purchase an articulating aerial platform called a snorkel truck.
