Under Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership, the Labour Party has rediscovered its commitment to building a mass class-based movement. However, there is still a long way for us to go before we can reconnect fully with all of our country’s communities. Richard has shown that he understands the transformations required to realise this potential.
His commitment to Open Selection demonstrates his understanding of the urgent need to develop a more democratic and thus dynamic party. His campaign to enshrine a new Clause IV into our party’s constitution makes clear his profound socialist dedication to placing people above the needs of private profit. His insight that politics does not just takes place once every few years shows he has grasped the importance of a Labour Party which is solidly rooted in all parts of Britain.
But democracy, socialism and solidarity are not just mere catchphrases for Richard. Rather, they are the values which he lives and abides by. In voting against the Welfare Reform and Work Act, he proved himself to be true to his socialist principles, and in his unerring defence of Jeremy, his utter loyalty to grassroots members.
As well as Unite and other trade unions, John McDonnell, Diane Abbott, Laura Pidcock, Dennis Skinner and many others are supporting Richard. It is imperative for our party, our communities and our country that Richard – who not only understands the challenges facing our party but also is more importantly a proven fighter and campaigner – succeeds as deputy leader.
