For the most optimum reading experience, I highly recommend you read the first book in this series before starting this one. Trust me, you’ll be grateful you did as it lays the foundation rather nicely.

Brad Sanderson and Molly Carter have been best friends as long as they have memories. Their families are good friends and they grew up together, almost like siblings. At some point, her feelings towards him became less friendly and more...lovingly. He’s four years older and when he left for college, Brad felt her absence from his life more profoundly but knew she was too young for those kind of feelings. So, for many reasons, he stayed in Boston following medical school, creating a life independent of his family’s on Carter Island, visiting sporadically year to year. But when his family’s crisis forced his return, it also brought him back to the woman he wanted out of the friend zone. Molly’s not having any of that as she’s terrified it will ruin one of the most important relationships in her life. She runs a successful deli and bakery, her family and the island life as much a part of her soul as breathing. Life in Boston isn’t an option.

The story picks up just a couple of weeks following the end of the first book. Brad is struggling to come to terms with the devastation of his family, forcing his return to Carter Island and confronting Molly who hasn’t forgiven him for his reaction to their one night stand months before. However, friendship wins out when she recognizes his desperate need for a shoulder to lean on. The steps to repair their relationship were realistic as I could empathize with both of them and the issues were genuine. I liked both of them in the first book, loved them here. They confronted their feelings with honesty and authenticity, which could be frustrating at times but I never gave up on them as they deserved what each had to offer.

The aftermath of all the secrets revealed from the first book (you’ll need to read that for yourself) was laid bare in this one. It forced so much change, both good and not so great. It was great, however, being back on Carter Island because it had become a second home for me. I knew these characters, wanting more of Molly & Brad and getting that delivered so wonderfully. Friends-to-lovers stories are one of my favorites and this is one of the best. There isn’t any childish angst, just lots of adult anguish as these two try to preserve their precious friendship while exploring the possibility of more. Brad’s family issues will break your heart, too, as well as some other unforeseen circumstances. But there are also lots of brightness to balance it all. I loved this story, finishing it in one day. My only regret is to now having to wait for the final book in the series.

Aftermath of Secrets by Cate Beauman is the second book in the Carter Island Series. This installment features a different couple, however, it is best to read the series in order, as there are events occurring, which link to the previous book, Secrets in the Glass. Aftermath of Secrets explored the after effects the explosive events of book one had on the main characters.

The hero Bradley Sanderson life turned upside down due to the actions of his family. Actions, which led to one of the biggest scandals to hit Carter Island. It forced him to leave Boston and return to the Island to take over the running of the family clinic. Not an easy decision, especially with the press hounding him every chance they got. The best thing in all of this was his friendship with Molly Carter. He and Molly has been friends since forever, but over the years his feelings for her grew and went beyond friendship. They both felt the same way, but Molly feared their friendship would end if they were to move from friends to lovers.

I had a marvellous time getting to know both characters. There were a few times though, when I wanted to knock some sense into them both. I found the romance to be well developed and loved how they transitioned from best friends to a couple. Their journey to this point was plagued with self-doubt and demons from the past, but with a little help from friends and family they navigated the rough terrains.

It was fun revisiting Carter Island and catching up with the characters from the previous book. I enjoyed learning how far they came since the devastating revelations from book one and watching them embark on a new chapter in their lives. The introduction of new characters made for some interesting moments. There was one in particular I felt could not be trusted, even though I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt.

The story proved to be entertaining. Personally, I felt this was better than the first book. However, I was disappointed with how the matter surrounding Brad’s family played out. I had expected there to be some intense and dramatic moments, but this did not occur. In addition, based on my experience with the author’s work I had expected a story that was both romantic and suspenseful. This was not the case this time around. The author introduced an element to the story, involving Brad’s brother that had the potential to be suspenseful, but she did not build on it. I am wondering if both would be further explored in the next book? Well, I will just have to wait and see.

Conclusion/Recommendation
Beauman created a beautiful friends to lovers romance in a small town setting that is sure to capture the hearts of fans of the genre.

A secret discovered has a way of unearthing other secrets along with it.

When Callie’s past came calling, it dragged in the Sanderson family name along with it; forcing Bradley Sanderson return to Carter Island. From being a brilliant doctor with a promising career in the big city, Brad is now forced to take up the responsibility of running his uncle’s clinic on the Island. For he is forced to bear the sins of his forefathers – the founding family of the town that had some dark secrets buried. But Brad may not be as blameless either for his return put Molly Carter on alert as guarding her heart becomes a priority. With so much history between the two of them, and the history of Sanderson family – Brad has his work cut out for him even before the appearance of his half brother with a checkered past.

I have to say that I am glad to have read the two books - Secrets Hidden in the Glass & Aftermath of Secrets back to back as the second book in the series picks up shortly after where the first book ended. To me it felt like I never even left the Carter Island.

As the setting is that of a closely knit community of a small town, we get to see some of the characters whose acquaintances we made in book 1, including Callie and Nate. Add on the Sanderson brothers to it and a few more secrets to be uncovered, and Aftermath of Secrets just takes off right from the beginning. Brad and Molly feels right together from the very beginning. Unlike Callie and Nate in the first book, Brad and Molly already have a history between them which makes it both easy and difficult for them to find their way back to each other. If only Brad was less stubborn and not as dense when it came to Molly!

Aftermath by Cate Beauman is Book II of the Charter Island series and picks up where book one left off, though it is Molly and Brad’s turn to be in the spotlight. I don’t know why Aftermath fell a little flat, unless it was because I was blown away by Secrets in the Glass and read it immediately after, and it didn’t grab me, like the first one. Could it be because I wasn’t as invested in the characters and their outcome, like I was with Callie and Nate?

One drunken night had ruined Molly and Brad’s lifelong friendship. Molly, Brad, and Molly’s brother, nate, had been like the Three Musketeers. They both missed it, though they didn’t know how to fix it. With romantic suspense a lot comes down to communication. Who would make the first move?

When the characters mentioned watching Friends reruns, I thought, isn’t Friends always on cable somewhere. LOL I watch them all the time. I love little touches like this that make it easy to relate to moments in the characters lives.

Molly is easy going, but she is a tomboy and not shy about saying what she thinks. I love Molly thoughts about fashion…sneakers, jeans and a sweat shirt. And makeup? What’s that? She is the opposite of Callie and I think that’s why they make such great friends. Sounds like someone I could be friends with too. They can fill in the blanks and help navigate some of their troubles, all while building a friendship.

Molly’s sister, Gwen, is the opposite when it comes to fashion. I love when she is dressing her for a New Year’s ball and she looks in the mirror, all glammed up, and says,”Holy crap.” I busted out laughing. Been there, done that.

Brad’s brother, Jordan, appeared, I thought his timing highly suspicious and Brad is leery.

I knew a shitstorm was brewing, it’s just, what kind of shit storm will it be.

I have read a lot of Cate Beauman’s books and love them. I’m not sure what happened with Aftermath. The beginning seemed a little choppy. I was already invested in the characters and wanted the best for Molly and Brad, but, for me, it never reached the level of Secrets in the Glass. I would recommend reading Secrets in the Glass first and feel Aftermath keeps Carter Island on the map.

What a ride this book takes you on!

Aftermath of Secrets is the second book in the author's Carter Island trilogy, and as the title suggests, a lot of the book finds the characters (mostly Molly and Brad, since it is "their" book, but the rest of their friends and families too) dealing with the aftermath of what happened in the first book. You *can* read it without having read the first book--you will mostly get the gist of what happened there--but honestly, you're really better off reading the trilogy in order. Starting with this one will take most (all, maybe?) of the suspense out of reading book one for the first time.

That said, I'm still going to go back and read book one ( Secrets Hidden in the Glass ) as soon as I get a chance. Because I really need to see how all of that crazy went down... ;)

But back to Molly and Brad's book...even starting a bit behind in the trilogy, I really liked the book. The Carter siblings (Molly, her brother Nate, and their sister Gwen) are all strong characters, and a close-knit family. (I'm already crossing my fingers that book three will be Gwen and Cade ;) ) The recent tragedy they all went through has only served to make them closer, and the events of this book bring them closer still. Brad grew up with all three siblings, and is Nate's best friend--unfortunately (fortunately?) he's developed more-than-friendly feelings for Molly as they grew older, but was never sure if/when to act on them. Until it "just happens" (as it does...) and ruins their friendship forever.

Or does it?

For the first half of the book, it seemed like Molly and Brad were stuck in a two steps forward, seven steps back kind of relationship, but they manage to get their act together earlyish in the second half. And then that relationship is threatened, and then Brad gets his head out of his you-know-where to fix it, and then things seem great. Which of course is when all h*ll breaks loose in another part of their lives...

Given what is hinted at about the events of the first book, this one is a lot lighter on the suspense--there is an element of danger running in the background for much of the book, and the culprit isn't a total surprise (although I was really, really hoping it wasn't who I suspected it would be...sadly, it was) but the hows and the whys take a while to truly come to light. Even though everything doesn't end up exactly how Brad and Molly were hoping it would, their eventual HEA is very sweet and has me looking forward to going back to book one and picking up three ASAP. And not just to get more time with Brad and Molly--though that's definitely a plus :)

Anyone who follows my reviews has probably figured out that I’m a romantic suspense junkie. And I’m a series junkie. Long before I was a book reviewer and blogger, I was an avid reader. I found Cate Beauman’s Bodyguards of LA County series quite some time ago, and I devoured each one as soon as they released. When the first book in The Carter Island Novels series went live, I was a bit giddy. When it was about three years between books, I was more than a tiny bit despondent. Suffice it to say that when I heard that this book was coming, I was beyond thrilled to get to read Aftermath of Secrets as I’m pretty sure I straddle the line between devoted fan and quite possibly a rabid fan of Cate Beaumann’s words.

While you can read Aftermath of Secrets as a standalone, there’s so much backstory in Secrets Hidden in the Glass (book one) that you’ll definitely get the best reading experience by reading these books in order. This book is a contemporary romantic suspense, small-town romance, and friends to lovers romance all rolled into one. (Honestly, that’s my favorite.) There’s no cliffhanger, and it ends in a very heartwarming HEA.

I’m a characters girl, so if I can’t connect with the characters in a book, it’s really hard for me to recommend it. I couldn’t have loved Molly and Brad more than I do. Molly was already a “friend” from book one. She’s a tough cookie, and I couldn’t admire her more. But Brad was just…SWOON! She’s steadfast, loyal, and his rock as he’s reeling from this crazy situation no one saw coming. And despite the fact that he can be a bit of a jerk at times when the emotions really overcome him, he’s not afraid to own up to his mistakes. And who doesn’t love a guy who can man up and admit when he’s wrong and do what he can to fix it?! The secondary characters are just as lovable, too, as one would expect from such a small town that’s its own island.

Compared to book one, the pace of this book is a bit slower (but definitely NOT slow), however, the twist wasn’t any less surprising. I’ve read the book twice now, and I loved it more the second time around. I literally hated putting it down to adult. Or sleep. Or even grab some food. I’ve loved each of this author’s books and this one was no different. I’m on pins and needles waiting for book three now!

NICUnurse’s Rating: I give Aftermath of Secrets by Cate Beauman 5 out of 5 stars!

Aftermath of Secrets is the second novel in the Carter Island Series. Usually, the second book in a series is good, but not exactly as good as the first. Not so with this series! I loved the first novel and I’ve swooned and cried over the second.
If you’ve read the first novel, you’ll love this story. It’s the story of Molly and Brad. They’ve known each other all their lives, but the road to finding love and peace is as turbulent as the ferry ride on a bad weather day! However, it’s so worth the effort.
Author Cate Beauman has a remarkably successful series on her hands with the first two of this series.
Molly Carter has lived on Carter Island all her life, except culinary school. It’s her home. She owns and operates the Carter Island Deli and Bakery. Her business is booming because she bakes the most delectable food and desserts. She’s been attracted to Brad most of her life, but she’s disappointed in him and herself for having one night of hot sweaty sex, and she thinks spoiled their relationship.
Brad has the weight of the world on his shoulders right now. He’s trying to do his best for his family in the aftermath of the last month. (I’m not telling what happened, I don’t want to spoil the first novel for anyone who hasn’t read it yet…what’s keeping you?) He has no one. He thinks Molly isn’t speaking to him and he misses her so much. He’s not sure how to fix this, but he wants to.
Okay, that’s the basic setup. I won’t spoil either of the novels by saying too much about the storyline. Let me tell you what I love about this series.
Author Cate Beauman has created a rich and fully developed community. Her characters are complex and yet distinct in their personalities. The conversations are realistic and intriguing. Storylines range from mysterious and dangerous to agonizingly personal. So far, all the novels are incredibly sexy and loving. Makes you want to take a vacation there or better yet, move there.
The best advice I can offer is grab your favorite beverage (wine for me) and a box of tissues. Settle in for a wonderful read. I simply hate to have to wait for the next novel in this exceptional new series, but I will. I can’t wait to see where this goes next.

“Aftermath of Secrets” by Cate Beauman continues the saga of life on Carter Island and centers on Dr. Bradley (Brad) Sanderson, who has returned to the island to take over his uncle’s medical practice, and Molly Carter, who has grown up from the young girl he used to hang out with until one memorable night caused an estrangement. Renewing their relationship will take work, but they may not both be willing to go all in to make it a success.

This contemporary romance with suspense elements is the second book in the ‘Carter Island Novels’ series and picks up seamlessly after the first story in the series. This could possibly be read as a stand-alone story, but I think it is much more impactful if the previous tale is read.

It was great to be immersed in the island life and to see how life progressed for the families impacted by the upheaval detailed in the first book. I enjoyed watching the way Brad integrated back into the society he had left behind and admired his courage at working through the discomfort of dealing with all of the changes in his life. The readjustment to his new normal, and the healing of past hurts with Molly is vividly depicted and I was invested in their journey and cheering for them all the way. The suspenseful element was a bit predictable and, optimist that I am, I was disappointed by the outcome for one particular person, but overall I enjoyed this story and hope to see more of these folks.

The second in the series didn't prove to be as action packed as the first. There wasn't really any who-done-it moments, we know who did it, why and how, at this point. This was more like...the title, the aftermath. I love Brad and Molly, and I loved getting to see the others as well, getting a glimpse of what happened after the horrible events of Secrets Hidden in the Glass. We pretty much take up where the first book left off, with the families trying to pick up the pieces and try and make sense of senseless tragedies. There are 2 things I wish we would have seen...in the prologue, Molly gives Brad a shell, and it says that they always do that for one another when one is leaving. I wish we would have seen more of that, or seen the treasures they collected, or something to tie that together. Secondly, I had hoped that the renovations on the clinic had been completed or at least started before the end of the book. I know I may be in the minority here, but I am hoping to see Jordan again. I would really like to see him turn things around. All in all, I loved this book, but I love all of the books by CB, she could write the phone book, and I would happily read it. I hope the next book isn't super far away :)

Aftermath of Secrets is the second book in Cate Beauman's Carter Island trilogy and follows a new couple; does that mean you can read it as a standalone?

Technically, yes, you could as the previous main characters are reintroduced in a way you'd get who they are even if you haven't read the first book. However, a lot of what Brad is going through is the aftermath (thus the title) of what happened in the first book, so I recommend you start with Secrets Hidden in the Glass.

So, how do I feel about Aftermath of Secrets?

Since I only finished its predecessor a few days ago, I can't help but compare the two novels and I've got to say: the sequel is a step-up.

There's less mystery, but the pacing is better and the dialogue has improved (even though it's still too mushy at times).

The chemistry between the characters also seems stronger.

Perhaps it's because Brad and Molly have known each other since kids and have been friends for a long time, but their dynamic was more interesting to me than the one Nate and Callie had in the first book. I also loved the friendship between Brad and Nate and how there were so many opportunities for their bromance to break, but the two stuck together.

If you read Secrets Hidden in the Glass, then you should definitely go for its sequel.

Secrets Hidden in the Glass left me anxious to discover how the dirty laundry played out on Carter Island. Because of the community being so close-knit, there aren't too many who haven't been affected by the past and current events. Brad Sanderson comes back to keep the clinic up and running -- but he has a lot of demons waiting to be reckoned with. His family has been ripped apart and there is a lot of unfinished business with Molly Carter.

This pair's friendship was interrupted by a night of deep passion -- that left both of them shaken and on edge years ago. Now, the chance to figure out what it all means is in front of them. Sadly, it's in one of the darkest times of life Brad has had to face. A cherry is added to the top when his long-lost brother resurfaces, threatening even more upheaval of dirty secrets for the Sanderson family.

As much as I loved the first book, I have to say that Cate really pulled my heart strings with Brad and Molly. Their love began as a deep-rooted friendship and that always gets me as I feel those are the strongest and offer longevity. The romance outshines the mystery -- but not so much that I didn't stay intrigued!

You really have to read the first book in this series to understand what is going on. It can be read as a stand alone--but there are undercurrents that happened in book one which is why all that happens happens.

The Sandersons were a founding family of the town--but the older generation did things-unspeakable things that left Brad holding the bag. He had escaped this little town and lived in Boston--a prominent doctor. His uncle who ran the clinic in the little town was involved with the atrocities and Brad had to come back to take over his practice.

Molly Carter made a mistake years ago with Brad and swore she would never do it again. They had been friends since childhood and she did not want to lose his friendship. She was an amazing baker and owned a bakery in town!

There are about three love stories going on in the midst of all the publicity of Brad's uncles and fathers wrong doings.

Brad's older brother showed up and Brad did not trust him one bit--but gave him another chance----

This book will keep you guessing and hoping that all works out in the end!!

I received this e-book from the Author for my entertainment and possible review.

While not as suspenseful as the first book in The Carter Island Trilogy, Aftermath of Secrets by Cate Beauman is a standout with world-building and character backstories. The author added a bit of mystery throughout the pages to keep the pages turning.

Both Molly and Brad were intriguing characters, each with their own worries and flaws. This story also entrenched pivotal characters from the first book. I would highly recommend reading the first book in the trilogy before starting this one as it all comes together nicely.

I enjoy getting lost in the words that Cate Beauman writes. She is a masterful storyteller and I like that she gives us breadcrumbs throughout and keeps the reader on their toes. Aftermath of Secrets is a friends-to-lovers, small-town romance and makes the perfect summer afternoon read.

Aftermath of Secrets follows the lives of Molly and Brad after the turmoil of the preceding novel, secrets hidden in the glass. Brad finds himself left holding his family together when all he wants is to make a life for himself and follow his own path. When Brads’ half-brother joins him on Carter island, Brad is starting to think that his new life is beginning, especially since he has found the love of his life. Molly, Carter Island’s very own star baker, knows what she wants but is scared to have it all. This book made me laugh and cry after meeting the characters on Carter Island in the previous book. The reader gets to really feel the characters’ emotions, and there is plenty in both books. There are many heart-warming moments of true friendship and love along with pretrial of trust.

Despite Aftermath of Secrets being a pleasant read, I was a little disappointed, I was expecting more of the mystery that was found in Secrets Hidden in the Glass and more about Callie and Nate and how they were coming to terms with what they had discover.

I received an ARC in exchange for a honest review.

I found Cate Beauman’s second installment from her Carter Island series, Aftermath of Secrets, to be a great read. I loved the first book and this one does not disappoint. It was great going back to this beautiful community. The story was full of mystery, suspense, action, adventure and romance. Could not ask for more than that.

I am giving Aftermath of Secrets five plus stars. I am hoping there will be more releasing soon from the Carter Island series.

I received this book from the author. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.

Amazing Book

I found this author by accident years ago. I read every single one of her Bodyguards of LA series and couldn't wait for the next one. Somehow she published Secrets in the Glass without me knowing and fell instantly in love with Carter Island. Brad and Molly have great chemistry and their grand romance is what little girls dream of. I sincerely hope Gwen gets her own book and we can revisit Carter Island for years to come.

Welcome Return

So good to have Cate Beauman back after a few years. This second Carter Island outing is a change from her great romantic suspense novels to a more of a contemporary romance. Thoroughly enjoyed Molly and Brad’s story. There were some sticky wicket issues that they face as their relationship moves forward and there are a few darker moments reminiscent of her LA Bodyguards series. Look forward to the third book in the trilogy!

The Aftermath of Secrets is intriguing. A wonderful follow up to book one, this book has a better pace with all the romance and drama with a dash of mystery that the first book has. Molly and Brad will capture your heart just as quickly as Callie and Nate did. Brad's life might be complicated, but when is love ever easy? Grab your favorite drink and curl up for a few hours with a great story.

So fantastic!

Molly gets her story and it is powerful! I love the Carter's and the Sanderson drama. I just wish the story had been longer. It felt like there were still things for them to complete. I am not sure how there can only be one more book. It feels like a bigger series to me. Bravo Cate!

This is the second book in the Carter Island trilogy. I recommend reading the first one. It is a long read but it has tons of important details that tie into the second book. I found this book much easier to read. I still love the Carter family dynamic. I really like how the author tied in all legal fallout from the characters in the first book into this one. I’m excited to read the third book!

Love this new series from Cate Beauman. Good stories. Not so keen on sex scenes but they are not the soft pornography of some authors these days so you don’t have to flick over 10plus pages to get past them. Good characters I could relate to and like.

This is book # 2 in this series. Book # 1 was fantastic and this one is just as fantastic. I love the characters and the setting of an island off the coast of Massachusetts. I'm going to buy book # 3 right now and dive right into it.

EXCELLENT SERIES

The 2nd book in The Carter Island Trilogy stands firm and true to its first novel. Characters, scenery, trials and tribulations, heartbreak and happiness, celebrating and triumphs are woven so beautifully…hard to put down. Highly recommended!

Just starting book 3! Really like this author and storyline holds my interest. I find I'm able to escape the humdrum, Covid-19 induced, confinment and explore existence on an island. No longer physically able to travel so I'm traveling through reading books.

The author has a wonderful way of building characters but one thing drove me nuts. She "winged" her brow instead of raised it (21 times between books 1 and 2). He "jerked" his shoulders instead of shrugged (28 times). The reason I mention it is because it distracted me from the story.

I didn't realize this was part of a series when I first chose the book. That said, I SO want to read the others. I can't seem to resist a good love story full of drama and suspense.
