Hozuki's Coolheadedness Manga's 1st New Original Anime DVD Unveils Cast, Story

Mariko Kouda, Shinya Takahashi join cast, then Hozuki & company go karaoke

The "Anime Hōzuki no Reitetsu Jigoku no Daikanshōkai & Talk Show in Hibiya" event announced on Saturday the story premise and new cast members for the first new original anime DVD (OAD) bundled with Natsumi Eguchi's Hozuki's Coolheadedness (Hōzuki no Reitetsu) manga. The limited edition of the 29th manga volume will ship on September 20 with the OAD.

The September 20 OAD will include two episodes. The Ryūgūjō (Dragon Palace Castle) members make their anime debut in the first episode, "Enmachō to Ryūgūjō."

Mariko Kouda and Shinya Takahashi will join the cast as Toyotama-hime and Shiotsuchi, respectively, in this episode.

Then the familiar members of Hell enjoy some karaoke in the second episode, "Jūhachi-ban ga Nai to Tsurai Are."

Two more OADs will ship with the manga's 30th volume on March 23, 2020, and with the 31st volume later in 2020.

Kazuhiro Yoneda is returning to direct the anime at studio PINE JAM. Midori Gotou is returning as scriptwriter, Jirō Omatsuri is returning as character designer, and Shōji Hata is returning as sound director. Sound Team Don Juan is in charge of sound production.

Eguchi launched the manga in Kodansha's Morning magazine in 2011. Kodansha Comics is releasing the manga digitally in English, and it describes the story:

In the afterlife, there exists Heaven and Hell. Hell consists of the Eight Greater Hells and the Eight Cold Hells, which are further divided into 272 subdivisions. Spearheading the seemingly endless, multifarious affairs in this gargantuan Hell is but one Fierce God, King Enma's first aide, Hozuki. Between this cool-headed sadist and his colorful band of peers, every day is a riot in Hell! And though this book might make Hell seem like a happening place, please try to behave during life!

The manga has inspired three 13-episode television anime seasons. Crunchyroll streamed the anime as it aired beginning in January 2014, and Sentai Filmworks released the series on home video. Sentai Filmworks then streamed the second and third seasons on HIDIVE in fall 2017 and spring 2018, respectively. The manga also inspired four previous OADs that shipped with the 17th, 18th, 19th, and 24th volumes of the manga.

The manga also inspired a puzzle smartphone game this year.
