Bishop Sharon Zimmerman Rader and Dr. Margaret Ann Crain interviewed the women bishops of The United Methodist Church, the first denomination to elect women to the episcopacy. Through the stories they collected, they learned what enabled these women to persevere, claim authority, define leadership in their own ways, and rise to the episcopacy. Their stories reveal how these clergywomen changed the church, blazing leadership trails both before and after their elections.

This book shares inspirational stories and pivotal moments that illustrate how these women managed the complexities of family, faith, and authority. Through their histories, women bishops have made––and will continue to make––both realized and unrealized differences in The United Methodist Church.

I regularly teach United Methodist Studies, and this text offers a much needed approach to understanding the history of women and the episcopacy in the late 20th century/early 21st Century United Methodist Church. The first half of the text focuses on the stories of each election from 1980 until 2016. The second half provides a theological and formative understanding of the ways in which the election of these women causes a rupture in the understanding of how the connectional nature of the United Methodist Church works. To see the movement of the Holy Spirit in the election of this diverse array of women, and then to see how these elections change how clergy and laity view the way in which the episcopal process functions as well as the role of women in the United Methodist Church.

I plan to use this text regularly in my classes and recommend it for both academic and local church pursuits.

Thank you to Bishop Rader and Dr. Crain for this wonderful narrative. It is so important to have these stories collected while most of these trailblazing women are still living. Their stories are inspiring, challenging, shocking and affirming. They show the importance and meaning of call and they reveal places where the church is at its best and at its worst. It is an important book for anyone who cares about inclusion within the church.
