Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits[Note 1] (International Sleeping-Car Company), known since 2010 as Newrest Wagons-Lits, is a French company known for providing and operating luxury trains with sleepers and dining cars during the late 19th and the 20th centuries, most notably the Orient Express and the Blue Train.

Founded by the Belgian Georges Nagelmackers in 1872, CIWL developed an international network of trains that provided luxury and comfort, at a time when travelling was still rough and dangerous.

Name history

CIWL has been known under three names:

  • Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits (1872–1893)
  • Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits et des Grands Express Européens (1893–2010)[1]
  • Newrest Wagons-Lits (2010–present)

The company has also colloquially been shortened to CIWL, Compagnie des Wagons-Lits, and Wagons-Lits.
