"Arcadian" opens with Paul (Nicolas Cage) fleeing what is apparently the end of civilization, represented by sirens and explosions off in the distance. In a hiding spot, he cradles two infant twin boys, assuring them that they will be fine. Cut to fifteen years later, where Paul lives in a remote farmhouse with his teen sons, Joseph (Jaeden Martell) and Thomas (Maxwell Jankins). (It is never explained where the people are living, but throughout the movie, everyone speaks with American accents. The original "Arcadia" was a region of Greece; here, it means a person who lives a simple quiet life.)

They find tranquility by day but fear the night. This evening, it is a moment of panic when Thomas hasn't returned home yet from the nearby Rose Farm, and the sun is going down. It is clear that people don't like to be out after dark. They are relieved when Thomas comes home. At the dinner table, it is clear that Thomas is the more instinctual, risk-taking brother, while Joseph seems more intellectual, interested in figuring out how to progress beyond just survival. After dinner, the three of them board up all the windows and doors and then move to a higher floor, where they think they will be safer. Later, there is a time of loud banging and pounding on the door as something tries to get in. The next morning, they see that there were deep scratch marks left on the outside of the door.

The next day, Paul convinces Joseph to show him what he's been working on in the barn. It's a rudimentary car, but Joseph apologizes that he has been unable to make it work. Paul switches two things, which allow the motor to cough to life. All three of them climb into the car, where Paul shows Joseph how to use the accelerator and the brake pedal, and how not to go too fast. Before going back to the house, Paul reminds the boys that they have several chores to do for him. Thomas protests that he had intended to go back to the nearby Rose Farm, where he secretly has a crush on their daughter Charlotte (Sadie Soverall). Paul says they both need to work for him today; Thomas can go back to the Rose Farm tomorrow.

But when Paul is out of sight, Thomas tells his brother that he is leaving, and Joseph can meet him later at the car to go home together. However, Thomas spends too much time with Charlotte Rose, and then runs recklessly, trying to get back to the car in time. He trips and falls into a crevice, losing consciousness in a cave. With darkness coming on, Joseph can only go home by himself. Fearing the worse, he tells Joseph to lock himself into the house. He will go out to find Thomas.

Calling for his missing son, Paul finally hears Thomas's voice from the cave and makes his way down to him. He says that they have to block the entrance, as they will have to spend the night there. At home, Joseph hopes to be able to trap one of the intruders so he can study it. In the cave, ferocious creatures try to get to the human men inside. Paul and Thomas manage to survive and kill some of their attackers, but Paul is badly injured. The next morning, Joseph comes in the car to find them. Paul is still unconscious. The boys put him in the car and try to figure out what to do. They decide to take him to the Rose Farm, but the parents insist that they can't spare any medicine to help him. Thomas can stay with them, they say, but Joseph will have to go back home with his father.

Joseph, Thomas, and even Charlotte will be forced to use everything their parents have taught them to survive when the fierce creatures attack both homesteads.
