On 13 April 2024, Iran's Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) launched an attack on Israel using drones and possibly missiles.[1] This is the first direct Iranian attack on Israel since 1979. The IRGC codenamed its attack Operation Truthful Promise.[3] The attacks have been launched in response to the Israeli bombing of the Iranian embassy in Damascus on 1 April.

Background

On 7 October 2023, Hamas, a militant organization with support from Iran and Qatar, carried out an attack in southern Israel, resulting in the deaths of 1,200 individuals.[4][5] Israel responded by launching a military operation in the Gaza strip, which resulted in the deaths of more than 33,000 people so far.[6]

After 7 October, the Iranian-backed proxy Hezbollah in Lebanon began attacking northern Israel.[7] There have been over 4,400 violent incidents recorded between Hezbollah and Israel since the start of the war.[8] Approximately 100,000 Israelis have been evacuated from northern Israel since the beginning of the conflict.[9]

On 1 April 2024, the Iranian consulate annex building adjacent to the Iranian embassy in Damascus, Syria, was struck by an Israeli airstrike, killing 16 people, including Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior Quds Force commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and seven other IRGC officers. Soon after the attack, Iran vowed revenge,[10] with reports suggesting this as a potential motive for the airstrike.[11] Iran claimed the building was part of the embassy compound, while Israel maintained it was a building used by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and located outside the fenced compound of the embassy.[12][13] Many countries and international organizations condemned the attack. The United States denied involvement or prior knowledge.

In the weeks preceding the attack, the United States, France, Germany and the United Kingdom warned Iran not to attack Israel, and that such an attack would be a major escalation and could lead to a military response by the West against Iran.[14][15][16] Iran was warned by Israel that such an attack could lead to a direct Israeli military response on Iranian soil. [17]

Iran subsequently threatened to attack United States military bases if it intervened and defended Israel in early April 2024.[18][19]

Events

13 April

Iran launched a drone attack targetting Israel on the evening of 13 April 2024.[20][21] The attack would consist of 'dozens of drones' according to Israeli and US officials.[20][22][23][24] Israeli officials estimated that around 100 drones were launched,[25] while a US official predicted that 400 to 500 drones and missiles would be launched from Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Yemen, though the majority would be from Iran.[26] The presence of missiles was possible.[1][27] Israel said that only military sites were targeted.[28]

Some of the released videos indicate the presence of Shahed 136 drones.[29]

Response

Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Israel all closed their airspace in response to the attacks.[30][31][32] Iran closes their airspace to VFR flights only.[33] Jordan said that it is prepared to shoot down Iranian aircraft that violate its airspace.[34] Contrary to media reports, Jordan did not announce a state of emergency.[35]

British prime minister Rishi Sunak condemned Iran's missile attack by stating that "Iran has once again demonstrated that it is intent on sowing chaos in its own backyard." Sunak furthered that the U.K. will continue to "stand up for Israel’s security" as well as that of the U.K.'s regional partners.[36]
