Adil Raja (born on November 1978 in Nowshera) is a Pakistani journalist, geopolitical commentator, businessman, whistleblower and a former Pakistan Army officer .[3][4] He comes from a family with a significant military background and brings over 19 years of experience from his military service, where he served in various roles.[5][6] Raja had a YouTube channel with nearly 650,000 subscribers where he shared his thoughts on Pakistani politics, the Pakistani military's involvement in politics, and related matters. However, it was banned in June 2023.[7][8][9]

Education

After joining the Pakistan Army, Raja, who had enrolled at the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA) in Kakul, graduated with the 99th PMA Long Course in 1999 and was commissioned as a military officer on August 1, 1999, in the 18th Horse Regiment located in Nowshera Cantonment, KPK.[10][11][12][4]

Adil Raja pursued higher education in International Relations as a private student at Peshawar University, where he earned his Bachelor's degree from 2006 to 2008.[6] Importantly, he accomplished this academic achievement while simultaneously serving in the Pakistan Army. [3][5][6][11]

In 2013, Raja enrolled in an M.Phil. program at Quaid E Azam University and completed courses during the initial two semesters. However, his academic progress was halted due to operational commitments.[11][12][13][5]

Transition to civilian life and journalism

Following his military career, Raja transitioned into entrepreneurship and established a land acquisition company that engaged in partnerships with prominent real estate organizations, including the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) and Bahria Town.[3][5][14]

In addition to his business endeavors, he also established himself as a geopolitical analyst and columnist, providing regular commentary on regional affairs through various media channels such as The Nation [15] and other English daily newspapers. [5][16][17][18]

Adil Raja voluntarily joined the Pakistan Ex-Servicemen Society (PESS) and assumed the responsibility of establishing its media cell. [19][20][21][22][23] Pakistan Ex Servicemen Society is recognized as the "only registered Organization of the Ex Servicemen of all the Armed Forces, Civil Armed Forces and Civilians paid out of Defence estimate of Pakistan".[24] Within PESS, Raja was appointed as the Spokesperson, advocating for the concerns of the veterans' community.[22] During his involvement with PESS, Raja also contributed as a columnist and appeared on talk shows, where he shared his perspectives on counter-narratives that were seen as unfavorable to Pakistan. [16][18][25][11]

Forced exile and persecution

In April 2022, during the Regime Change Operation, Adil Raja encountered scrutiny for his public statements regarding the military, evidenced by a raid on his house.[26][27][28] Therefore, he made the decision to leave Pakistan and continue his efforts from the United Kingdom where his family resided.[29][30][31]

In June 2022, Raja decided to make his own YouTube channel named "Soldier Speaks" which was terminated in May 2023. [7][8][9]

Assets Seized

In April 2023, legal cases were filed against Raja, resulting in the confiscation of his assets in Pakistan and the freezing of his bank accounts.[32][33][34][35]

Detained in the UK

In June 2023, Raja was taken into custody under the United Kingdom’sSection 59 of the Terrorism Act 2000" by detectives of Counter-Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE) from his home for reportedly inciting someone to engage in terrorist activities, whether entirely or partially outside the United Kingdom.[36][37][38] However, he was released a few hours later by the British police after being questioned and granted bail.[39][40][41][42][43]

Court Martial

Adil Raja faced a development on November 25, 2023, as he was court-martialed through Field General Court Martial (FGCM) under the Pakistan Army Act, 1952.[44][45][46][47] According to ISPR reports, he received a 14-year 'rigorous imprisonment' sentence in Pakistan for violation of the regulations outlined in the Official Secrets Act of 1923 pertaining to espionage and acts prejudicial to the safety and interest of the state.[46][48][49][50][51]

Raja asserts that the court-martial was conducted without informing him of the trial or allowing him to defend himself, asserting the illegality of the entire process.[52][53][54] Despite the sentencing, he rejects the decision, emphasizing constitutional violations and the impossibility of his reinstatement in the Army due to the forfeiture of his pension and benefits in 2022.[53][55][56][54]

Terrorism Case Dropped

After an eight-month-long investigation, the British Counter-Terrorism Police dropped the terrorism case against Adil Raja in March 2024 due to insufficient evidence of his involvement in terrorist activities. No-Further-Action will take place in this case.[57][58][59][60] Raja was initially arrested in June 2023 under Section 59 of the Terrorism Act 2000 but was released on bail at that time.[39][43][61] As per a press release from Adil Raja's solicitors, Raja fully cooperated with the investigation, asserting his innocence and denying the allegations during interviews. He granted access to his devices, which were independently reviewed using protocols akin to those for journalists. Additionally, the Police scrutinized his YouTube broadcasts, paying specific attention to his language and the context in which it was used.[61][62][63]

Current Situation

He currently resides in London where he continues to create content for his online audience.[64][65][66]
