Reopening the New Clarence as a Community Pub

The New Clarence Pub in Hull’s Theatre district is one of the city centres largest and most accessible pubs. Since re-opening after the pandemic it has provided a home for many clubs, community groups and real ale drinkers from across the City. A group of former regulars and staff are planning on forming a co-operative or a community benefit society to raise funds to bid to buy and renovate the pub if the owners decide to sell.

The pub wasn’t always a pub – it was originally 4 houses with shops on the ground floor. In the 1970s it was converted into a Co-operative store and in the 1980s it became the New Clarence, following the loss of the old Clarence on Charles Street. The pub has a very distinctive ‘London pub’ style frontage, which is sadly looking the worse for wear after decades of under-investment. Times haven’t been easy for the landlord of the New Clarence and other pubs in the area and the recent cost of living crisis has only made things harder. If we have enough support our goal is to do a major fundraising campaign so that we can bring the building and facilities up to scratch. Our vision is to create the most accessible and inclusive pub in the town centre, run for the benefit of the community, and respectful of the quiet and beautiful Kingston Square Area.

The purpose of this survey is to gauge the level of support for bringing the New Clarence back to life. We want to hear from local residents, former regulars and anyone with an interest in supporting the New Clarence community. It has been hard for us to all keep in touch since the closure of the pub. This is a chance for us to reconnect virtually and, with a fair wind, to have a drink and sing-a-long once again on Charles Street

Please take the time to complete this if you would like to see the New Clarence open again.

Once we have the results of the survey we will arrange another meeting of the group to present them and discuss next steps

We would like to hear from you if you are able and willing to help in the next steps. We could really do with help from anyone with legal, accounting and social media skills and experience.

If you have any questions or would like to know more please email SavetheClarence@gmail.com

Thank you for your interest and support
