Research Officer in Algorithms and Optimization

 

Salary is competitive and not less than £35,432 pa inclusive of London allowance

 

This is a fixed term appointment for 1 year, with possible further extension.

 

LSE Department of Mathematics is looking to appoint a Research Officer on the European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant Project “Scaling Methods for Discrete and Continuous Optimization” (‘ScaleOpt’) working with Principal Investigator Dr László Végh. The Research Officer will contribute to the research objectives of the “ScaleOpt” project, by conducting substantive individual research and developing new results in the theory of algorithms and optimization. The main objectives of the project are developing new scaling methods in discrete and continuous optimization, and extending the limits of strongly polynomial computability.

 

Applicants should:

 

  • By January 2019, hold (or be near-completion of) a PhD in a discipline relevant to optimization, such as Mathematics, Computer Science, or Operations Research.
  • Demonstrate research interests and comprehensive knowledge in areas relevant to the project ScaleOpt: the theoretical foundations of discrete and continuous optimization, with a particular focus on strongly polynomial computability.
  • Show evidence of developing a body of good quality publications, in well-recognised peer reviewed outlets, through independent original research.
  • Have the ability to develop a coherent programme of research and establish models in the context of the research project
  • Have excellent written and oral communication skills, including an ability to place one's specialist work within a broader context and to communicate research findings effectively to a range of audiences.

 

Applicants will be expected to work as part of a research team.
