Introduction

The world of technology is constantly evolving, and to succeed as a software developer, you need to stand out from the crowd. My 30-day internship at Tublian was an exceptional opportunity to not only stand out but also to explore the depths of Open Source. In this article, I share my inspiring journey and the lessons I learned from working with dedicated mentors, and talented colleagues and contributing to open source projects.

The Beginning of the Adventure

My journey with Tublian began on October 1, 2023. The first week was relatively smooth, as I was already familiar with Git and GitHub. However, it was only the beginning of an adventure that would change my perspective on technology.

Week 1: The fundamentals

During the first week, I had the opportunity to explore the basics of Open Source, understand why it's so important to the software industry, and learn how beginners like me could contribute. I also consolidated my knowledge of Git and GitHub, essential tools for any developer.

Week 2: Discovery

The second week was a little more demanding, as I had to learn how to contribute to large open source projects. I explored the structure of these projects and their communities. Tublian's Copilot AI tool was a valuable asset, simplifying contributions by deconstructing issues and connecting like-minded contributors.

Week 3: The Role of the Maintainer

The third week enabled me to understand the role of maintainers in Open Source and the challenges they face in maintaining these projects. I also learned how to interact with maintainers and ask pertinent questions, thus contributing to the success of the projects.

Week 4: Making it happen

The last week was more demanding than expected due to contributions to larger projects. Despite the longer merger deadlines, I managed to achieve my objectives. I'm particularly proud to have succeeded in the Hacktoberfest 2023 challenge, submitting four Pull Requests and having a tree planted in Tanzania in my name.

Lessons learned

Fruitful collaboration

During this internship, I had the privilege of contributing to some remarkable projects, including WebCrumbs, BioDrop, First-Contributions, Welcome-to-Open-Source, and submitting Pull Requests to projects such as Dipy and BeforeIDieAchievements. It reinforced my passion for Open Source.

The future

My journey doesn't end here. I'm currently immersed in the Gapps project, initiated by my mentor. I continue to learn, grow and contribute to the open source community. My experience at Tublian was the starting point for my adventure in the world of Open Source.
