Brunel Public Policy reposted this
My work was mentioned at the Scottish Parliament The Independent British Vape Association has referenced our work at Brunel. Reading from the report “There are also other benefits: a recent study by Brunel University London found that the NHS could save more than 500£ million per year if half of England’s adult smokers switched to e-cigarettes.” And then they add “a figure that could deliver a proportional similar figure in Scotland”. I value the opportunity for our research at Brunel to contribute to the ongoing debate surrounding the ban on smoking. By informing discussions, our work can influence (as it is happing in this report and others) members of parliament and organizations. When academics engage in public discourse, it's important to focus on presenting evidence and facts rather than personal opinions. This approach should help citizens (who pay taxes to let us teach and undertake research 😊) and policymakers in making informed decisions! When I first entered this profession, my primary motivation was the scientific impact. It's quite typical, considering the academic career relies heavily on publishing in scientific journals. As they say “publish or perish”😅. However, I realise now that I may have become too obsessed on data and methods, on the journal where to submit…sometimes losing sight of the broader picture. What's the reason behind writing these scientific papers we produce? It cannot be only scientific impact🙄. What do you think? 😊 Brunel Business School Brunel Public Policy #nhs #lifestyle #smoking #vaping #alcohol #ban
