Gintama Manga Gets New Anime Film

Hideaki Sorachi's manga ended on June 20

The Comic Buster bookstore in Hodogaya, Yokohama posted a picture on Twitter on Thursday that shows the 77th compiled book volume of Hideaki Sorachi's Gintama manga and reveals that the manga is getting a new anime film. The manga volume shipped on Friday.

The "Gintama Shirogane Matsuri 2019 (Kari)" event in March had teased that a new anime for the franchise was in production.

The previous anime premiered in October 2017, and began with the "Porori Arc" story, before it entered the "Silver Soul" arc in January 2018. The anime entered into a hiatus after episode 353, which aired in March 2018. The anime then returned as Gintama: Gin no Tamashii Hen (Gintama: Silver Soul Arc) in July 2018, and ended its run in October. Crunchyroll streamed the anime as it aired.

Silver Soul is the title of the manga's final arc that began in July 2016.

Sorachi's Gintama manga ended on the official Gintama app on June 20. The manga ended its run in Weekly Shonen Jump in last year's 42nd issue on September 15 as planned, but Shueisha announced on September 15 that the manga would continue "for a little while longer" in Shueisha's Jump Giga magazine. The manga's run in Jump Giga launched with a 54-page chapter in the magazine's first winter issue on December 28. Gintama ran in Jump Giga for three consecutive issues. The third chapter in Jump Giga announced in February that the manga would continue in the free app. The manga then launched in the app on May 13.

Sorachi began the manga in 2004. Viz Media published the first 23 volumes in English.

The manga has inspired several anime series, two anime films, various OVAs and event anime, two live-action films, and two live-action net spinoff series.
