Ancient Romans likely breathed lead pollution. Ice cores show ancient silver production produced lead levels high enough to lower some people’s IQ. Airborne pollution accounted for much of the exposure, says Joseph McConnell, a research scientist at the Desert Research Institute and lead author of the study. When Pacific salmon leave the ocean and return to their natal rivers and streams to spawn, it’s a one-way journey. After breeding, they die en masse.
