Click here Vol 27 No 27 20 May 2022 HSD Sports DayThe High School held its annual Sports Day this week and despite the forecast of heavy rain, we enjoyed hours of fun, competing in the sunshine. Pupils tried their hand at racing, javelin-throwing, zumba-dancing, shot-putt, long and high jump, table-tennis, rounders, boxercise, Gaelic Football, and frisbee. There was something for everyone to try. This year we even introduced a novelty wellie throwing competition. A whole-school Sports Assembly was held on Friday when pupils were presented with their medals and trophies. Well done to everyone who helped make this day such a great success. IADT Portfolio DayOn the 21 February I attended the project day online at the Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT). Essentially the day allows you to submit a portfolio to IADT art courses if you did not have time to create one or if you do not know how to create a regular portfolio. The course has entries into Graphic Design, Art, Animation, Photography and Visual Media, as well as Design for Film. They grade you out of a maximum of 600 points that goes towards your overall points for that course in the Leaving Certificate. The day ran from 9.00 am-4.00 pm approximately and involved completing four practically-based modules, namely, perspective in drawing, crafts, modelling and storytelling. They were all extremely interesting. We explored one, two, and three point perspective and how it makes your art more coherent; making a landscape scene out of one piece of paper; modelling a small human or non-human head out of clay; and using themes to create a six boxed story board. As well as submitting the work from the project day you have to submit two pieces of work exploring set themes. This year it was Homes/Environments, Identities and Light/Space/Time. I chose to explore light as a concept, specifically in film. You could choose to explore these themes in the format of an A1 sheet, 9 x 9 x 9 cm box, 2 x A2 sheets folded as an 8 page booklet, animated gif/meme, photo book or a storyboard. You can manipulate, fold, score, cut these formats any way you like, as well as using any mediums you wish. Personally I used an A1 sheet and a photo book because it related the most to the courses that I wanted to apply to. I used scenes from Euphoria as references for two tonal lighting, since it’s the main form of lighting that they use in the show. I wanted to show in the collage at the bottom right how different colours can have different effects and can create different moods. Then I further explored the idea for lighting creating emotions in film in the top left of the sheet, specifically fear, happiness, sadness and suspense. The photo book was an exploration of how light exposure and how zoomed in the camera is effects the photo. I showed the process to get the exposure and the crop of the photo right to create a fully rounded photo. I received 500 points for Design for Film and Art and 260 for Graphic Design. I found this day and the extra theme exploration exceptionally helpful for applying to portfolio courses as I wouldn’t otherwise have had the option to do any art course because I didn’t have time to create a regular portfolio. All of the lecturers were really nice and ready to answer every question that was asked. They gave me countless tips for creating seamless art and to further my art in general. I would highly recommend doing this if you are interested in doing an art course in IADT and do not have the
time or intertest to form a portfolio! European Youth Orienteering ChampionshipsCongratulations to Gerry Browne who won Gold representing The High School in the Leinster Schools orienteering championship. Gerry has been doing very well in recent orienteering competitions. He won the sprint and middle distance events at the Irish Orienteering Championships and has been selected for the Ireland team going to the European Youth Orienteering Championships in Hungary in July. We wish our pupil every success in future competitions in the future. Home EconomicsCongratulations to all the Form 3 pupils studying Home Economics who completed their Junior Certificate practical examinations recently. We wish them every success in their written examination in June. Form 6 Construction StudiesCongratulations to all those pupils in Form 6 who have completed their Leaving Certificate Construction Studies projects after many months of hard work. As you can see all that endeavour has been well worth it: the results speak for themselves. Dates for your Diary
