- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 May 2023I thought this is a really wonderful tale - very touching that even when you think that you’ve worked hard & have a good life that there are still insecurities to overcome
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 September 2018This is a standalone book with a HEA, a couple of typos, swear words & sex scenes. It was a book that was featured in “New Beginnings”, a collection of first books by Cheryl Douglas. This book is told in dual POV in first person.
Mackenzie & Ryker have been together for 20yrs. They married young & after 2 boys, they have grown apart, neither wanting to face or confront the issue. Ryker cannot believe it when his best friend tells him she wants a trial separation & asks him to move out. He gives her the space she wants, to find herself, but is dismayed to learn she’s dating again. He still loves her & wants her too much to just give up on “them”...
Mackenzie is enjoying her life as a single woman, rediscovering herself. She is still attracted to her husband, but have they grown too far apart to get back together, or is Ryker only wanting to stay for the sake of their teenage sons?
I liked the characters in this book. Hopefully Zane will have learnt his lesson in this Book. There were no evil person, & Ryker’s siblings all seem nice & interesting. 4*
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 February 2017Brilliant start to a series. The Steele brothers are a force to be reckoned with. They came from nothing and have built themselves up. But money doesn't buy happiness and this proves it.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 May 2021This would have worked better as a Novella as it drags on and on. Mac decides she wants to separate from her husband even though he's not in agreement. She loses weight and starts looking good and then early on they're reconnecting again but it didn't really make sense why Mac insisted on separating and I found her irritating.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 March 2016Great book couldn't put it down , loved the journey Ryker and Mac made ..

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 September 2015I received an ARC copy of this book in return for an honest review..
What i loved about this book is the fact it draw's you in from the start. I Loved the fact that Mackenzie made Ryker fight for her. and make him realize that he could lose the love of his life and best friend.
you had some funny, sad and moving parts. you could not help but fall in love with Ryker .i can not wait for the rest of the books to come out
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 September 2015I was given this ARC copy for an honest review and I can only say I absolutely loved it! Mackenzie & Rykers story is one that I could relate to and my heart was torn for both of them. It's a story of 2 people married for many years, the kids are growing up and Mackenzie & Ryker have lost their way, Mackenzie feels unwanted sexually and Ryker just works so hard to give the family he adores everything that financial security brings. But that comes at a price and as much as Mackenzie loves Ryker she won't be made to feel unwanted and ask him to leave and for a divorce. Rykers heartbroken and so are the kids, but Mackenzie pushes forward as she can't see a way back. This wonderfully written story that will touch your heart, especially like me if you've been married 20+yrs will have felt this at some point and just like Ryker & Mackenzie realise it's worth fighting for! So well done Cheryl on giving us a great story that is honest with great insight, bring on book 2 of the Steele Brothers!

5.0 out of 5 stars A real look into a family life without losing the passion.
Ryker and Mac had it all...but in the mix of getting it...they lost the passion that had started it all. Getting back together was what they both wanted, but you have to change and grow together... Its a delicate balance. I think the author did an excellent job of showing it. It was sad, funny, poignant and romantic. Loved the book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Second chances are sweet
This book was a nice story to kick back with on a lazy day.
Losing the spark after years of marriage and drifting apart makes you feel lonely. Asking your spouse to leave is heartbreaking.
Mackenzie and Ryker have drifted from a close, loving relationship to a necessary, abbreviation of their past. They were sexless, disconnected and losing ground on their feelings for each other and Mac couldn't do this any longer so she asked Ryker to leave.
No way did he see this coming and it shook him to his core. He couldn't believe his Mac didn't want him anymore. He knew she loved him but it gutted him to think she wasn't IN love with him anymore.
No matter what it took he was coming home and he was doing everything he could to get there.
This was a great book. The only thing I would have liked was a bit more angst between Mac & Ryker. It didn't take anything away from the book though.
I liked the author's style very much & will look for more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Marriage - communication & intimacy issues arise!
As much as I dislike not having a perfectly clear HEA wrapped up in a big ribbon, I feel the HFN works well for this book (Hello? First in a series of hot brothers? More of the characters in the rest of the books?).
Me being me here, I'm going to mention something I read in another review (it's not verbatim and I'm not going to go looking for it so I can quote word for word cos' I'm lazy). It's pointed out that our h forgives our H pretty much instantly for something he keeps from her towards the very end of the book. It has very big consequences, and the other reviewer said it didn't seem believable and that one protagonist involved wasn't dealt with correctly. While it is something that wasn't 110% corrected... I believe it, and I get the H's reasoning and I get the h reasoning. It's life, love and 20 odd years of being in a relationship with someone and trusting their words. YES, she left him for half a year. YES, it was both their faults. NO, no-one cheated, it honestly was lack of communication that caused it AND the little drama near the end. I do think that that drama made our H realise his own idiocy. We shall see in the rest of the series :D

5.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars.
The h is almost 40 years old and the H is a little over 40. They've been married 17 years and have two sons, ages 14 and 15. The h makes the decision to separate from her husband in order to find herself again. She was tired of feeling unwanted, undesirable, hurt, and confused.
This was a very good story. Heartbreaking. You could actually feel the pain the MC's were feeling. This short story had me in the palm of its hand til the very last page. The side characters were good people and I'm even going to sample book 2 as well. I would recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great storytelling
This was recommended by a friend and I loved it! Marriage in trouble books are hard to come by, especially ones written as well as this one
