In 2012 we look forward to welcoming the Year of the Dragon. Traditionally a family celebration, the partner organisations invite individuals, friends and families to come together at a series of events and workshops across Broxtowe, Gedling, Nottingham and Rushcliffe where you can be introduced to crafts and music, exhibitions and enjoy our spectacular fireworks finale at Highfields Park.

Welcome to our Chinese New Year Celebrations. Also known as The Spring Festival, this is the most widely celebrated event in the Asian calendar.
6 January - 20 February, 10am - 5pm
This stunning series of photographs are taken from a vast collection of images by the two documentary photographers Yuan-Hsiung Wang and Xue Qian. Both are concerned to capture the rapidly changing nature of the environment and the way of life and culture of some of the 56 different ethnic groups who live in China.

Lunchtime Talks with Yuan-Hsiung Wang and Xue Qian
The artists will present an illustrated introduction to their work, talking about how their images aim to capture the changing face of China, Chinese landscape, and Chinese culture following 30 years of rapid growth which has resulted in China being the world’s second largest economy.

Chinese paper lanterns Important warning Nottingham City Council, Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue and The University of Nottingham do not support the use or sale of lanterns from Highfiwelds Park. Please note that University of Nottingham Security staff will be patrolling the park and anyone selling these lanterns will be asked to leave. The launching of lanterns is also prohibited for reasons of health and safety.

Rong Tao
We are delighted to welcome a return visit from Chongqing based dancer and choreographer Rong Tao, who will be working with many different groups in Nottingham and Charnwood during a 6-week East Midlands residency.
Rong Tao’s very full programme will involve him developing a number of new works in 2012, including with students from Oak Field School which will contribute to a performance at the Episodes platform at Nottingham Playhouse; creating 2 new pieces with more than 40 members of the Dance4 CAT (Centre for Advanced Training); and making new work with dancers in Charnwood which will feature at the outdoor stage celebrations on 29 January. Tao will also be visiting a number of primary schools in the area, as well as participating in the Meander Theatre week which will involve young adults with learning difficulties, and contributing to the Nottingham Confucius Institute Family Workshop Day at Lakeside on 22 January.

Processional Artwork Workshop and Parade
Musical Soundscapes of China
Join artist Melvyn Rawlinson and create some processional artworks inspired by the colour, traditions and symbolism of Chinese New Year. Following the workshops your artworks will be stored until the day of the Chinese New Year celebrations in Beeston (Saturday 28 January). You will then meet the artist at 10.40am in Broadgate Park to be part of a procession along the pedestrian High Road and into Beeston Square, led by an elegant Geisha. The artwork will be yours to keep following the event. Don’t forget to ‘dress for mess’ on the day.
Join classically trained Chinese musician Ling Peng for a musical journey using the sounds of China interwoven with inspiring stories and myths. Participants are encouraged to bring their own instruments or are welcome to use the Chinese Percussion instruments available. A fun interactive workshops for those who enjoy musical improvisation and experimentation. Who knows where this musical journey may take you? Nottingham Confucius Institute presents a Family Workshops Afternoon
All are welcome to drop in and participate in sessions run by staff and students from the University of Nottingham’s Confucius Institute who will introduce several traditional Chinese art and cultural ceremonies. Watch demonstrations, and then have a go. Please note it may be necessary to wait to participate in some crafts activities, and it will be necessary to book to participate in the Fan Dance Workshop

Broxtowe Borough Council in partnership with the Beeston Bid and Bartons, welcome you to a vibrant celebration for Chinese New Year featuring entertainment from Chinese, Japanese and Tibetan cultures – including some old favourites and new surprises! We are particularly pleased to welcome Beijing trained dance artist Fan Mang Mang as we launch a year of events that celebrate the link from the Beijing to the London Olympics.

Follow the lantern trail throughout the town and visit all businesses displaying lanterns in their window. If you collect enough stamps, you can claim your free gift at the Chinese Cultural Event at Bartons from 12noon until 3.30pm. Collect your lantern trail instructions and map from Beeston Square during the morning event between 10am and 1.00pm.

Performances and Demonstrations • Vintage puppets of the Beijing Opera (puppeteer Melvyn Rawlinson) gracefully express the Chinese Classical Music played by Ling Peng on Erhu (a demonstration specially devised for Broxtowe’s 2012 Chinese New Year Celebrations) • Bicycle Stories ‘How the Chinese years Were Named’ with Melvyn Rawlinson. Kamishibai is a traditional Japanese style of storytelling from the beginning of the last century when peddling sweet sellers enticed their young customers with promises of fantastic stories told with picture cards, from the back of their bike • Ling Peng will tell the enchanting story of the Dragons Pearl… a traditional and haunting tale from Chinese culture • Traditional Lion Dance by the Notts and Derby 7 Star Praying Mantis Kung Fu School

Broxtowe Borough Council Dance Residencies
Fan Mang Mang Dance Residency, Rylands Junior School
In the three weeks prior to the Chinese New Year events, dance artist Fan Mang Mang will be working with children from Rylands Junior School to create an original dance piece fusing traditional Chinese Folk Dance and contemporary practice. Pupils will present this new work at the Beeston Square event at 11.15am, Saturday 28 January and at the Lakeside finale on Sunday 29 January. Fan Mang Mang is a professional dancer, teacher and choreographer who studied traditional Chinese Dance at the Beijing Dance Academy. We are thrilled to
have her with us this year as we celebrate the link between the Beijing and London Olympics 2012.
Push Residency,
Push Dance Group are an innovative company of learning disabled adults from the Barncroft Day Centre who will be working with Chinese dance artist Du Dan throughout January to create a Chinese and contemporary dance fusion which will be showcased at the Beeston Chinese New Year event at 10.40am, Saturday 28 January at Beeston Square.
