About the author

Nora Wolfenbarger is the author of the Blackbird series, where homicide detective Silas Albert brings together a sisterhood of abused women who challenge the norm. She is also published in a delightful collection of short stories about the secrets of a fictional small town in Missouri, Hawthorn Creek. Nora loves to write thrillers and mysteries where lives hang by a thread. Readers compare her work to Baldacci, C.J. Box, and Gillian Flynn When not dreaming up new challenges for her main characters, she and her husband raise cattle in Missouri. They have a dog named Truman, and a cat named Elvis. Her weakness is gooseberry pie, homemade of course. Follow Nora's latest adventures on Goodreads, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2019Nora Wolfenbarger’s The Promise is a good mystery/suspense, particularly as the first of a planned series. It has a chilling murderer at work; the violence itself is not too graphic, and is rather off- center; a partially told backstory fleshes out characters and situations; subplots and issues are contemporary and believable—alcoholism and domestic abuse for example. Best of all to this reader, the book has charm. The two protagonists are Silas Albert, a police detective with a prosthetic hand, and his teenaged niece Lila, who is an organ recipient, but also a vital, quick, and witty young woman. Their relationship is fond and believable. Minor characters have winning moments. Some good messages appear succinctly: “Anyone can do what’s right,” Silas says; a child views his father as a powerful Transformer rather than as an injured man; and Lila takes “a second to appreciate the affection” she sees in a friend’s gaze. These are tender moments. Overall, this book reveals that Wolfenbarger is a very talented writer and promises a good series on the way.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2019Nora Wolfenbarger does a great job of developing her characters, building the story line and creating suspense. This mystery is well written and can be read by a variety of age levels. So many mysteries are filled with such horror that they overwhelm the story line - not true in The Promise. The story line is the main point of the book and I can't wait for her next book.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2021This writer is excellent & kept me interested all the way through. Had good character descriptions, but I did get confused at times as to who was who. I also liked that the main characters were such good people. The last maybe 10% of book really confused me initially as it was EXTREMELY surprising, but then I was drinking some beer by then so the next day I went back to review all that & figured it out although even then it was confusing. I highly recommend this book & hope to read the next one & did think the end leads well into the next in series to be written.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2024Very good writing. I’m on the second book of this series
- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2020I didn't know exactly what expect when I started this book. Yes, I read the blurb, but blurbs often showcase the best portion of the book, leaving the reader disappointed. Well, if you like psychological thrillers, with suspense that keeps building, then you've hit the motherlode! Wowza! This book has more twists and turns than the labyrinth! I THOUGHT I knew "whodunnit", boy, was I wrong! An amazing read that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2021I was intrigued by the storyline. A fan of books with a unique detective and serial killers. It was a good an rd fast-paced read although all the different characters got a bit confusing g but it all came together in the end. And what a surprising ending it was.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent 'whodunnit.'
The Promise by Nora Wolfenbarger is an excellent 'whodunnit', with a tight plot and enough twists and turns to keep you guessing to the end. The concept of a serial killer murdering transplant recipients is a novel motive for a killer and the author crafted a story around this with skill and a wonderful imagination.
It opens up, not only previously unknown family connections, but old wounds and incorporates a desire for revenge hidden under the guise of a straightforward serial killer on the loose. Alongside the detective story are the Blackbirds. A shadowy organisation, set up to help those in need - mostly the families who hare suffering domestic abuse. The organisation become deeply involved as the story progresses and they work in tandem with the police.
An excellent debut novel. I hope to read more from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hold onto your hats, it's a good one!
Silas, a detective, inherited a warehouse from his grandfather and made him a promise on his death bed to give the place a heart. It became a shelter for abused women, called The House of Audrey, in memory of his sister. Silas took on the parenting role for his niece and in their own roles worked tirelessly to keep the streets of Kansus City free from crime and its women safe. With a serial killer was on the loose, Silas does what he does best but what he uncovers is way beyond belief.
Fantastic, creative plot with well developed characters that keeps you gripped from start to finish. Fresh, unique storyline packed with interesting twists and turns that builds the suspense, progressively increasing the intensity, exploding into a full, unexpected reveal at the end. Could have gone either way but I chose wrong lol. Great book can't wait to read more. Brilliant job!
