Product Description
Get the look of professional packaging with Duck Brand Reinforced Gummed Paper Tape. It's made with an aggressive, water activated adhesive that provides an instant bond to most corrugated surfaces and provides an industrial performance seal. The backing is reinforced by fiberglass filament for extra tensile strength and designed to resist splitting or tearing which is ideal for high volume, heavy-duty shipping. The tape backing is also waterproof to help keep your box in tact in all weather conditions. In order for the adhesive to activate and get sticky, water must be applied onto the tape. Just cut to size, use a wet rag or sponge to activate the adhesive, then stick onto the box. For best application, use with a gummed tape dispenser machine (sold separately).

The trick is to wet a napkin and not overuse water and apply it to box as soon as the water is applied, oh and also you have to press it and hold it for a bit to make sure it adheres properly. Other than that it is big and I am using it from the center (unfurling it) instead of tearing the sticker and using the normal end. Also it was way too expensive. I mean it's paper and glue. I feel $14 for a roll of tape is outrageously overpriced. At $7 a roll, it would be expensive but this was ridiculous. Still, I needed it so there you go!
It works REALLY well. You just get a wet sponge in a bowl and slide the shiny side of the tape across it, then place it on the box and smooth it out. This stuff really stays put! Plus it makes a good surface for regular shipping tape to adhere to, which I did to plug up the corners which are always tricky to cover.
I highly recommend using this tape as the primary way to seal boxes. You don't need a fancy dispenser, just cut to length with scissors as needed. I know dealing with wet tape sounds messy but it really isn't, and the cost of getting tape goo on your fingers is a minor inconvenience compared to having properly sealed boxes.
There's a right way and a wrong way to seal cardboard boxes and this paper tape is definitely the right way. Plus it's reinforced with fiberglass thread so it's tough stuff.
As far as tape for watercolor goes, it works alright. I had problems with it peeling away from the edges on a few sheets, but I think it was because I hadn't overlapped the paper enough (only about a quarter inch -- I was trying to keep as much paintable area as possible) rather than because the tape wasn't sticking. It may also be because the adhesive absorbed extra water from the paper. I didn't have this problem as much when I overlapped the paper to about half an inch. The reinforcing threads don't do much either way. They're just thin threads, and weren't difficult to cut. In theory you're supposed to be able to wet this tape down again to reactivate the adhesive to pull it off the paper when you're done, but I haven't tried that. If it sticks, though, it is well and truly stuck. Don't PLAN to be able to peel it off -- plan to cover it with matting or cut it off.
It's only not 5 stars because it's a little finicky on how wet it should be, but that's probably a factor common to all gum tape, not just this one. If you use this a lot, it might be worth it to get a dispenser for it, but it isn't strictly necessary.
In order to avoid that hassle, I've gone all over town to different office supply stores looking for the paper tape that USPS uses. Those stores all told me I should try to buy it at the Post Office - but the Post Office employees said I should go to office supply stores.

When I saw this Duck brand reinforced tape on Amazon, I went ahead and bought it since it looked right in the pictures. It turned out to be exactly what I needed!
As far as applying this goes, this is what I ended up doing:
1) Cut a piece to the length I need
2) Wipe the gummed backing with a wet wash cloth (it does have to be fairly wet, so don't wring it out too much - or the tape won't stick)
3) Apply the tape to the box and rub it smooth
Using that method, I can cover an entire box in just a few minutes - and I definitely got better at it with a little practice. The key is to find the right level of moisture in the sponge - if it's not wet enough, the tape won't stick - if it's too wet, the gummed backing will come off.
Overall, I highly recommend this tape if you're using registered mail. It's nice and wide, reinforced, and easy to apply. What else could I want?
