- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2019Ms. Spilman is a craftsman of storytelling. This is a finely crafted piece of literature that you may wish to compare to any piece of art. The careful choice of words and phrasing set this book apart from the crowd. The setting is in mythical Harshbarger Mills WV and is seen through the eyes of Lorraine while you explore this setting and the family influences that make her.
I'm from the area that her fictional story is set, and while I know it is fictional, it lives very real in my minds eye.
I could not put this book down, from start to finish. The characters were so vivid in my mind that is was as if they were family.
This book is an experience that you will want to share with others.
These experiences of real life occurred over and over in many variations. I've heard these stories from my own family and have lived it to some degree myself. The reality of life, not only in Appalachia, but all over these United States is written here in this book.
Whether your roots are West Virginia or not there is much to learn of life during these difficult times, then and now. Thank You Joan Spilman for such a beautiful story of life, real or not.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2019"The past is never dead," said Faulkner. "It's not even past." In Joan Spilman's novel This Will Never Stop, four women struggle to escape the past they know, only to discover that each escape leads them further into the past. In four interconnected stories, each woman seeks to claim her ground, to own herself, and to an extent, despite suffering and sacrifice, they succeed. But success is fragile. Lorraine, whose mother deserted her, has come to an uneasy truce with that loss and with herself, but when her absent mother sends her a long letter, asking understanding and forgiveness, it is as if the past has been waiting for that moment. More and more is revealed, deeper and deeper we go, until finally, from the grave, Lizzy, the matriarch takes us back to the source--not to tie things up, not to solve or conclude, but to unveil the source of her pain and theirs. Nothing is solved, nothing ends, but the truth is revealed. This is a beautiful novel about strong, stubborn women, who confront life with courage and passion. That does not make their lives easier, but it does make them admirable, and this novel a truly memorable experience.

Could this book happen anywhere? For sure it can. Forget the WV moniker, the book has a universality to it that will make it entertaining and thought provoking to anyone who reads its content. Whether their roots are West Virginia or not there is much here to experience so much so any and all have so much to gain.
Reminiscent of Pearl Buck? You be the judge !!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2019I opened my package from Amazon and found my copy of "This Will Never Stop", and I immediately had to sit down and start reading. These characters are so rich, with life and loss, with love and hatred and fear.
Every page held me and kept me reading to the end. Each character, with their own foibles, longings, needs, memories and desires, reminds me that we are all different;; we all have so very many pieces in our own "puzzles". Our own secrets.
I loved every character, and I loved this book! Such a rich, fulfilling, read! I highly recommend it to anyone that loves to be enthralled by someone else's story.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2019Way to go Joan! You kept me busy all weekend since I couldn't put this down. I really like the way you wove the story line around these women, showing their strengths. Having grown up in rural West Virginia during the sixties, I felt a bond with this family - all of them. I plan on donating a copy to my local library this week
