International Classification of Vestibular Disorders (ICVD)

Standardizing Research and Practice to Improve Patient Care

The International Classification of Vestibular Disorders (ICVD) consensus documents establish evidence-based consensus and standardization regarding defining syndromes, diseases, diagnostic procedures, and treatments in the field of neurotology with the goal of improving patient care.

These consensus papers are developed by the Committee for the Classification of Vestibular Disorders of the Bárány Society, the world’s leading professional organization devoted to vestibular research and its translation into clinical practice.

The Bárány Society, recognizing that although numerous advances in vestibular research had been made, there was mounting evidence that the field may be hampered moving forward by the lack of a formalized classification system, uniform definitions, and explicit diagnostic criteria. Thus, the ICVD initiative was launched at the XXIV Bárány Society Meeting 2006 in Uppsala, Sweden.

“We believe the time is right to pursue development of the first International Classification of Vestibular Disorders (ICVD-I). Initially, we expect its predominant use would be to guide investigators conducting clinically oriented vestibular research. It is our belief that, over time, well-honed research criteria will gradually spread to use in the clinical domain. We envision a staged and iterative development process that involves international experts from both neurology and otolaryngology backgrounds.”

– Alexandre Bisdorff, Michael Von Brevern, Thomas Lempert and David E. Newman-Toker and the the Committee for the Classification of Vestibular Disorders of the Bárány Society (2008)

The Committee first defined key vestibular symptoms as a basis for a subsequent classification of specific vestibular disorders and diagnostic criteria, which then undergo review to build consensus around these formalized definitions.

The Journal of Vestibular Research, the Official Journal of the Bárány Society, plays an important role by publishing the final ICVD documents, which are all open access and free to read, download, and share.
