It is the end of another academic year at ITI, and we wish our new cohort of graduates from Singapore, China, India, Malaysia, Macau and the Philippines all the best as they start to make a difference in their communities.
2022 saw the return of live performances and travel, allowing us to maintain and deepen our artistic collaborations across the world. Our alumni have also continued to make their impact as artistic leaders globally, inspiring us to keep striving to nurture the next generation of theatre artists.
“All through recorded time, art has given Form to human experience. It engenders voice and line, depth and resonance, to human desires and dreams; dispensing harmony and concord, and the milk of the sweetest pleasure. This is wonderful and wondrous amidst war, climate disaster and death. Art provides secular succour and a glimpse of the subtlety of mind and nobility of heart that humans are capable of.”
~ T. Sasitharan (Sasi), ITI Director & Co-Founder, Crediting Art
We welcomed back Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) student and New Colombo Plan Scholar Jemima Dunn, who joined the graduates for her final year of study leading to her BPA degree. Sasi also gave an online lecture to WAAPA students, continuing the collaboration. ITI was also happy to work again with periodic faculty members — veteran director Aarne Neeme (Australia), actor and director Guillermo Angelelli (Argentina) and Kutiyattam master teacher Kapila Venu (India).
Engaging the Community
ITI hosted a presentation by theatre director Peter Oskarson (Sweden) in June. From July to August, faculty member Guillermo Angelelli (Argentina) offered masterclasses. The graduation productions were also presented at full capacity this year.
"[A Midsummer Night's Dream] exhibited the actors' strong grasp of their training in the traditional performances and their acting ability in plain sight. … The audience were very engaged throughout, often breaking out into laughter. I look forward to watching more of these actors’ respective stage works in the near future."~ Neo Hai Bin, theatre practitioner and critic
Dine for Good
ITI’s new fundraising project, Dine for Good has started with the generous support of restaurants, hosts and their guests.
“We got to experience Lolla’s tasting menu in support of ITI’s Dine for Good project. It was a feast of flavours, creatively combined. On the other side of the counter where we sat were Chef Jo and her efficient team turning out the dishes. A delicious way to support ITI!” ~ A guest at Lolla, one of the participating restaurants
2022 would not have been possible without the ITI Angels; principal donor Stephen Riady; Friends of ITI; grant-makers Tan Chay Bing Education Fund, Chew How Teck Foundation, Hong Leong Foundation, National Arts Council and Cultural Matching Fund; and our partners Aesop, CornerStone Wines, Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, Pek Sin Choon and RJ Paper.
