NEW MEMBERSHIPS

SDG Publishers Compact

In December 2020, IOS Press became a member of the UN’s SDG Publishers Compact and in doing so committed to develop sustainable practices and act as champions of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), publishing books and journals that will help inform, develop, and inspire action in that direction. As a company, we primarily contribute to this by the sharing of ideas and in relation to the content that is published and, during the first months of 2021, we began looking at the SDGs with an aim to set specific targets. Below are five current priorities and we are working with journal editors to assess board membership in terms of gender and diversity, as well as assessing partnerships in terms of responsible production. Pistoia Alliance

IOS Press has joined the Pistoia Alliance, a not-for-profit members’ organization working to lower barriers to innovation in life science and healthcare R&D through pre-competitive collaboration, and we will be sharing updates to highlight how researchers in our audience can benefit from this exciting new partnership. The alliance team nicely sums up the possibilities: "Together, we overcome common R&D obstacles by identifying root causes, developing standards and best practices, sharing pre-competitive data and knowledge, and executing technology pilots." There are numerous projects with which to get involved, including artificial intelligence, data visualization, and FAIR implementation, and plenty of wide-ranging events. View website

Tech News

We also have news of another website: Our linked data (LD) portal has been rebranded and relaunched and we are pleased to share it with you!

IOS Press LD Connect

We are thrilled to share the new-look LD Connect with the world! Our linked data portal has been relaunched and updated, providing publicly available linked machine-readable metadata from all IOS Press journals and books. It also constructs artificial intelligence (AI)-powered embeddings derived from all full text data, further unsiloing research data and enriching contextual relationships via its powerful knowledge graph. We have worked in close collaboration with its users to develop a suite of powerful semantic search tools to query and visualize data. The LD Connect Toolbox harnesses the power of AI and machine learning, offering discovery tools that can unlock the relationships and patterns embedded in the data – and help accelerate research (currently in proof of concept stage).

Semantic Web
Open Access Journal

Since its launch, the Semantic Web journal has taken a lead in bringing more transparency to academic publishing due to its open and transparent review process, along with its recent transition to a gold standard open access journal. Now attention is turning to another core aspect: the stable provision of data and software relevant for a published paper. In March, an editorial was published in the journal that outlines a new way of working by implementing a new requirement that authors will need to provide data and software relevant to a paper submission to the maximum extent to which this is feasible.
