• Mathematics and numeracy teaching learning sequence

Teachers are invited to trial and modify the teaching learning sequences.  Content may need to be modified to meet the particular learning needs of a student cohort.

Designers started with the same template, and while there was broad agreement on the use of the template – there are some variations between the units, including:

    • differentiated activities may be found in either the activities column or the evidence and differentiation column
    • generally, language elements were not repeated once they were recorded in an earlier activity
    • cross curriculum priorities are included in some unites but not in others.

Use this feedback form to provide feedback and suggestions and forward the completed form to Erika Vonaspern at email: Erika.VonAspern@sa.gov.au.

These teaching learning sequences have been developed for newly arrived students with minimal or developing English and are designed to scaffold and challenge the students within their linguistic and cognitive capacities. They have been developed from the Intensive English Language New Arrivals Program Mathematics and Numeracy report.

Teachers of students with minimal or emerging English will find the units useful because they address:

    • the explicit language to be developed for each teaching and learning area
    • how English language development occurs concurrently with the development of mathematical concepts
    • how to address lower order mathematics goals as part of the scaffolding for higher order goals
    • how to manage the diversity of student needs within a class of IELP/NAP students
    • how to design and write a teaching and learning program for mathematics within the IELP/NAP, addressing all of the above.

    Measurement and geometry

    Using units of measurement: length

    Mathematics Levels: A B C
    Reception, Year 1, Year 2

Students in Reception compare the length of objects. In Year 1, they measure, compare and order lengths using direct and indirect comparisons and informal units to collect and record information about objects. In Year 2, they measure and order greater lengths, (distances).

    Money and financial mathematics

    Mathematics Levels: A B C
    Reception, Year 1, Year 2

In Reception, students identify situations that involve the use of money. They recognise the different value of Australian coins and notes. In Year 1, they recognise, describe and order Australian coins according to their value. In Year 2, students identify and use combinations of coins and notes for simple purchases.  Students explore aspects of the National Consumer And Financial Literacy Framework.

    Assessments:

    Fractions and decimals

    Mathematics Levels: A B C D
    Reception, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3

Students are introduced to fractions (Reception) through recognising a whole and parts of a whole.  In year 1, they explore the naming pattern beginning with halves. In year 2, students divide shapes and collections into halves, quarters and eighths and explore the different ways of representing fractions using symbols, words and diagrams. In Year 3, student model and represent unit fractions.

    Number and place value: counting

    Mathematics Levels: A B
    Reception, Year 1

Students use the language and processes of counting to 20 and beyond (Reception) and up to 100 (Year 1). They match the number name with the numeral and the quantity. Students are introduced to place value.

    Number and place value: calculating

    Mathematics Levels: A B
    Reception, Year 1

Students in Reception explore familiar situations that involve addition and subtraction and models these using objects and drawings. In year 1, they represent  addition and subtraction problems using drawings and symbols – beyond 20. Students use counting strategies (count on, partition, rearrange) to calculate a simple addition or subtraction mentally – beyond 20.

    Fractions

    Mathematics Levels: E F
    Year 4, Year 5

In Year 4, students recognise common equivalent fractions. They visualise, describe and order equivalent fractions andlocate them on a number line. They can count by quarters, halves and thirds, including with mixed numerals. In Year 5, students order unit fractions and add and subtract fractions with the same denominator.
