Frank St BBG Microgrant

Frank St Bee & Butterfly garden recognizes that gardening and land stewardship are often inaccessible to individuals who have been racialized living in so-called Ottawa because of settler colonialism, forced displacement of Indigenous Peoples from their lands, and inequitable access to land for Black and racialized settlers due to prioritization of white settlers in land ownership. With this in mind, we aim to support Indigenous, Black, and racialized individuals who garden or steward land in the areas near the Frank St BBG by distributing microgrants.

We recognize that these microgrants offer limited resources. We aim to gradually expand the quantity of grants awarded, the amount of money in each grant, and the place of residence for people who are eligible to apply as more resources become available to us.

What is the grant?
  • “Microgrant” where recipients receive $50 to spend however they wish
  • 2-4 recipients chosen randomly from the applicant pool once a month
  • Grants get distributed during gardening season (April to October) until funds run dry
What are the conditions to apply?
  • If you live on Algonquin land (so-called Ottawa)
  • AND you identify as Indigenous, Black or as an individual who has been racialized
  • AND you engage in any kind of gardening or land stewardship throughout the growing season (roughly April to October)
  • AND you have not already received a grant this year

What do you mean by gardening and land stewardship?
We are flexible on this definition because it looks different to everyone. Examples include:
  • Seed bombing and watering a vacant plot
  • Cultivating a herb garden on an apartment balcony
  • Maintaining a community garden plot
  • Any type of “guerilla gardening”
  • Putting empty yogurt pots around local seedlings to keep rabbits away until they are big enough to survive
  • Replacing a grass lawn with clover or native plants
  • Cleaning trash or pollutants from a local park or body of water
  • Establishing a community compost initiative in your neighbourhood
