Protecting the Natural Environment in Armed Conflicts

Peter Maurer, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), calls to accelerate protecting the environment to safeguard communities enduring conflicty

In this opinion piece, Peter Maurer takes stock of environmental degradation and damage in contemporary conflicts and sets out how parties to armed conflict and the humanitarian sector can tackle the challenge of the environment and climate crisis. Detailing the ICRC’s recently released Guidelines on the Protection of the Natural Environment in Armed Conflict, he emphasizes the need to accelerate implementation of the legal regime protecting the environment to safeguard communities enduring conflict – and future generations – from immediate and long-term impacts.
