Death A La Mode

Rate this book
Jackie’s still adjusting to having a steady boyfriend—not to mention getting used to the fact that Lucas is a death broker/vampire. With the help of his ex-lover Cathryn—whom Jackie doesn’t quite trust—they’re trying to figure out why Lucas was turned—and by whom.

Jackie’s biggest challenge at the moment, though, is creating a winning entry to the annual Perfect Pecan Pie Festival, the premiere food contest in Palm Dunes, Florida. Testing recipes and running her new restaurant are keeping her busy.

But no one’s too busy for murder.

When people around local up-and-coming folk singer Crissy Darwin begin turning up dead, Lucas is pulled into the investigation. He and Jackie suspect that Crissy herself is the target. But can they solve the mystery before the killer strikes again—and without ruining the Festival?

Pour yourself a nice glass of Lambrusco, cut a slice of pie and settle in to see what happens.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book was simply everything I wanted. I tore through it in a single sitting, sad to see it end but so happy (and hungry) having read it. Do you like pie? Do you like vampires? Then you will be just as happy reading this short little book as I was.

We join Jackie and Lucas immediately following the short story that mushed my love of Rafe/Nell and Lucas/Jackie together. While the world smooshing was awesome, the actual events were not so hot. Jackie was “possessed” by an evil old woman, and they all learned that the world is going to end. Sad news, right? Jackie copes in a way that is very familiar to me – by diving into pie. OK, so for Jackie it was more making and trying to win a pie competition, but pie is pie. While she is playing the avoidance game, Lucas is being pulled to the scenes of some deaths that only serve to stress Jackie more. Turns out, the singer that Jackie is looking forward to see perform at the festival is being surrounded by people dying. This murder/mystery kept the book rolling without taking away from the excellent and “real” dynamics between Lucas and Jackie as they both try to find their new normal.

Yes, we get a nice ending with a bow tied around everything (except, you know, the world ending), but we also get a great turning point that has me begging for the next installment. Where will this power couple of supernatural awesomeness end up next? And what food will the next book make me crave above all others? These books are happy little gems that leave me happy, hungry, and excited for more.

Lucas and Jackie’s story continues with Jackie dealing with PPS, perfecting the perfect pecan pie, thwarting a maniacal killer, not to mention she and Lucas still learning about his being a half vamp/death broker and what this all means with the end of world imminent. It’s a fascinating episode filled with touches of humor, nosy neighbors, a murder mystery, quite a few emotional ups and downs, and a surprise or two along the way. The well-drawn characters and the easy, fast-paced storyline make this an enjoyable journey that you can willingly get lost in. The interconnections between the characters and the action make this an intriguing and extremely interesting read. I have a feeling it won’t be long now before we have answers to some of the questions about what’s in store for these two. Really looking forward to what’s coming next.

Oh what ! Seriously addictive series of events these stories have turned out to be!! Tawdra is a breath of fresh air in the paranormal Genre that keeps me up way to late at night.

Death A La Mode is the continuation of Lucas an Jackie's story. With more scandalous murders and new problems popping up you really can't help but root for Jackie and Lucas. I can not wait to find out how their addictively amazing story finishes!!

Death A La Mode
Tawdra Kandle

Two books in one. The first main story is about Jackie and Lucas that's 90% of the book. The other 5% is about Rafe and Nell, Lucas's friends going to the beach. And some acknowledgements, then recipes that were used and I think I want to try :)

Coming back from their vacation was a godsend for Jackie. Her vacation was a waste of time and memories she doesn't want to dwell on. She just wants to find a way to get past all the nightmares and voices in her head, besides the end of the world that soon will be coming. So coming home should be at least some what relaxin...nope, coming home Jackie finds a flyer about the pie contest at the festival. To be the best she will have to hopefully beat Itty Bitty Betsy in the name of Al. Then another murder turns up just as everything seems to have settled down from the upset of vacation and the flyer. Who murdered Cane and why? Why are her nightmares getting worse and worse? And they still need to find out who Veronica is besides a vampire.

Spoiler Alert

Well the author has done it again. I couldn’t put this one down. I will say reading them book in order will make them more enjoyable, but not necessary. In this story Jackie is so focused on wanting to bet Bitsy in the Triple P pie contest, that she isn’t dealing with what happened when she and Lucas was at the Carruthers. Lucas is still trying to figure out why the death broker and vampire thing has happened to him. But the best part is trying to figure out who is trying to kill the folk singer Crissy Darwin. Do they figure it out before it's too late? Does Jackie win the pie contest? And can Lucas get answers? Read to find out.

Death A La Mode by Tawdra Kandle is the second book in the Recipe for Death series. I enjoyed reading it but didn't like it near as much as I enjoyed the first book. I like that it continues Lucas and Jackie's story. It had more interesting characters to meet along with some of the others from the first book. It has a mystery just like the first book did and it has the same paranormal elements as the first book did. I like that Lucas isn't your normal every day vampire but is a death broker on top of it. It is an interesting twist to a typical vampire character. I liked some of the new characters and hope to see them in the next book. I would recommend Death A La Mode to anyone who enjoys paranormal mystery books.

Death A La Mode is the 2nd book in Tawdra Kandle’s Recipe for Death Series. The first book, Death Fricassee was also great. This is a really fun series to read and it’s addicting as well. Once I started reading, I didn’t want to stop.

I love the characters in this book. They are fun and quirky but stable, well as stable as they can be considering their circumstances. They are empathetic when necessary and very relatable. I fell in love with Jackie and Lucas in Death Fricassee and really like what this author has done with Lucas’s vampirism and other tendencies.

Kandle’s writing style continues to keep me entertained and interested throughout all of her books. I’ve read several of her titles and I’ve enjoyed every one of them. They don’t feel pretentious or overwhelmingly full of unnecessary information as many do.

I love the environment these characters live in. It cracks me up that they live in a retirement community with nosey neighbors and plenty of grandparent types. Even the minor characters in this book have very big personalities.

I highly recommend this book and this series to anyone looking for a fun murder mystery that has minor paranormal elements.

LOVE THIS SERIES!!

This series is so fun!! I actually read the short story first which takes place right before Death a la Mode and then immediately had to purchase all the others about Lucas and Jackie. I'll eventually need to catch up with Rafe and Nell as well.

You can read this book without reading the others, but it will really add to the story if you've read them all. This story continues to follow Lucas, vampire/death broker and Jackie, normal girlfriend in supernatural circumstances. She is coping with all the weirdness around her by trying to win a pie contest and then even more weirdness surrounds her.

Lucas and Jackie have such a sweet love affair with some extraordinary challenges thrown in. I highly recommend this series for anyone who likes a little mystery with their romance, especially if you like the paranormal kind.

I was given an ARC by the author for this honest review.

I have fallen more in love with Jackie and Lucas. They are funny, interesting, complex. I definitely enjoy the supernatural part of this story and all the characters. The emotional upheaval that they go through felt realistic, like the things they went through, could really happen. The sparks between them definitely lead to some hot moments! I can't wait for the next part of the story, I couldn't put this one down!!

OMG - Tawdra Kandle has done it again!!! Another awesome book by an awesome author!!!

I enjoyed the continuing relationship between Jackie and Lucas. The way that Jackie put her heart and sole into trying to create a Pecan Pie that would be good enough to carry on Al's tradition. I don't write spoilers -- but OMG this is definitely another "I Can't Stop Reading" type of book.

I was given a copy of this book for an honest review.

First, I want to thank Tawandra Kandle for providing me with this book so I may bring you this review.

Death A La Mode is the second book in the series Recipe for Death. This book must be read in order and not as a standalone. In my opinion I liked this book better than the first installment into the series. It had more of a mystery plot and way less of a vampire edge to it.

I loved the whole mystery surrounding the poisoning of the two characters and trying to find out how they were linked.

There was a moment in the book when I teared up a little bit. When the readers found out that Al’s family gave Jackie his restaurant. That was an incredibly sweet gesture on their part. Not to mention that she kept it the exact same way.
