HIGHLIGHTS

ITI Director receives 2022 Harvard Club of Singapore Fellow Award

ITI Director T. Sasitharan (Sasi) has been awarded the 2022 Harvard Club of Singapore Fellow Award (formerly known as the HUAAS Fellow Award).

He is the third recipient to receive this prestigious award as a recognition of his “contribution to the development of the arts and culture in Singapore, which cannot be seen apart from his leadership and direction of the Intercultural Theatre Institute (ITI) over the last twenty years, and its impact on the next generation of artists in Singapore.”

The first Fellow was awarded to Dr Noeleen Heyzer in 2019 and the second Fellow was awarded to Prof Wang Gungwu in 2021.

“Without art there is no life; no life worth speaking of any way. Art permeates our being, who we are; how we see, love, touch and become. It is an honour to be working in art. To be recognised for it by HUAAS is humbling and to be mentioned in the same breath as Dr Noeleen Heyzer and Prof Wang Gangwu is more than I deserve.”

Their inaugural devised play, COALateral, premiered at the 16th TANGHAL National University and Community-based Theatre Festival.

ALUMNI

ITI alumni around the world have been busy contributing to their communities. Some highlights:
  • Melissa Leung (‘05) was invited as a panelist for the HKAPA Digital Conference 2022 organised by The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, where she spoke in a roundtable discussion on approaches adopted by teaching artists among artistic and pedagogic practices.

  • Alumni Regina Foo (‘17) and Sonia Kwek (‘17) co-directed Catch a Breath!, a piece that educates children on the importance of breathing through physical theatre and puppetry. They are joined by Tan Weiying (‘17), Regina Toon (a.k.a. Ora) (‘19) and Catherine Ho (‘16) in the cast and production team. The performance is also being presented digitally in collaboration with artists and educators to support curriculum objectives for pre-schools.

  • Grace Kalaiselvi (‘14) is the concept creator and director of LINK: Identity, an ongoing Australia-Singapore collaboration first presented as a work-in-progress showcase at the Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay. The performance encouraged children and their parents to explore different aspects of the self, their families, communities, and the world.

  • Peter Sau (‘03) spoke at Disability Arts: Critical Conversations between South Korea and Singapore that shed light on the establishment of effective ecosystems for disability in Singapore and South Korea, presented by ArtsEquator, Equal Dreams, and Taeyoon Choi Studio.
