This Week in Congress
     Floor Schedule: The Senate plans to take up legislation that would permit the Keystone Pipeline construction to move forward. The House will vote on a Homeland Security Department spending bill that will include a provision seeking to control how immigration enforcement funds are spent in order to block the president’s plan to provide amnesty to certain illegal immigrants.  Read more...

FMCS to Assist in West Coast Port Negotiations
     After months of appeals from industry groups, including the Auto Care Association, the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS) this week became involved in West Coast contract negotiations between the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA).  Read more...

House Passes Billing Restoring Obamacare Work Week to Forty Hours
     Two days after being introduced, H.R.30, the Save American Workers Act of 2015, passed the House on Jan. 8 with a bi-partisan vote of 252-172. The tally included 12 Democrats, which was five less than voted in favor of similar legislation in the 113th Congress.  Read more...

U.S. Automakers Demand Currency in TPA Bill
     The American Automotive Policy Council (AAPC), which represents the policy interests of U.S. automakers, will take a stand against trade promotion authority legislation if it doesn’t direct negotiators to include strong and enforceable currency manipulation rules in all future trade agreements. In the past, the AAPC and its member companies, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Ford and GM, have supported every free trade agreement the United States has ever finalized.  Read more...

U.S. Pushes Against New Korean Car Emissions Standard
     On Dec. 15, U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman and Korean Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Yoon Sang-jick, met in Washington, D.C. to discuss Korea’s new car emissions standard. U.S. trade officials pressed Korea to either weaken Korea’s new policy aimed at curbing vehicle pollution or give U.S. automakers more flexibility in complying with it. Korean trade officials pushed back on the demand, indicating that environmental policy goals should not be regarded as barriers to trade.  Read more...

National Export Initiative Falls Short of Five-Year Goal
     The National Export Initiative (NEI), announced by President Obama in his 2010 State of the Union speech, fell short of meeting its goal to double exports by the end of 2014. The latest available data shows that U.S. exports of goods and services increased by 44 percent, from $1.583 trillion in 2009 to $2.28 trillion in 2013.  Read more...
