Brush Selection
While inexpensive foam or craft brushes might seem like a budget-friendly option, they often fall short when it comes to applying acrylic paint smoothly. Investing in a few quality soft-bristle art brushes from your local art store, you’ll notice a significant difference in paint coverage, cutting down on the need for multiple coats of paint.  Better quality brushes will last longer and reduce the shedding of bristles. Yes, quality tools and materials do make a difference in the finished project.

Choose soft-round and soft-flat brushes in a variety of widths to suit your painting needs. Thinner brushes excel at detailing small surface areas, while wider brushes are optimal for efficiently covering larger expanses.

So, gather up your supplies, unleash your creativity, and let’s paint the town (or wreaths!) in the enchanting spring vibes. Join me on this crafting journey sponsored by Testors, where every stroke of paint brings joy and inspiration. Let’s make this spring season one to remember with DIY painted beaded wreaths!

Crafting Romance

DIY Valentine’s Day Magic for Wine Glass Lovers

Sponsored by Rust-Oleum

It’s Valentine’s Day, and you’re all set for a romantic evening with your special someone. The mood is right, the wine is ready to be uncorked, and the wine glasses you found at a local discount store look a little — too plain for the occasion. Let’s transform those inexpensive wine accessories into ultra chic wine accompaniments and let’s add some heart-shaped coasters for extra rizz.

Rust-Oleum Painters Touch 2X Ultra Cover Sweet Pea and Blush Pink Spray Paint and Rust-Oleum Universal All Surface Aged Metallic Spray Paint will have inexpensive wine glasses looking like they belong in a chic bistro. The Rust-Oleum Universal All Surface Aged Metallic Spray Paint has little specks of gold that are noticeable when the painted area catches light.

Note: Only the lower third of the wine glass and stem are painted to avoid applying paint to the parts of the glass intended for drinking.

It’s the perfect way to add a personal touch to a romantic rendezvous. It’s important to always follow the painting directions located on the spray cans.

Painted heart-shaped wood coasters add the perfect touch to your romantic rendezvous – the ultimate Valentine’s Day DIY. Testors Acrylic Craft Paints will liven up those plain coasters.

OK, Cupid Creatives, let’s get this DIY started!

Wine Glass Instructions

Note: Make sure to paint in a well-ventilated area and use safety glasses and craft gloves while spray painting. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the spray paint for best results.

  • Wash and dry the wine glasses.

100 Carol Heppner LLC Testors Valentines Day mask gold stem

  • Apply the masking tape to the areas of the wine glass where you want to prevent the spray paint from reaching. Make sure to cover the mouth area and the inside of the wine glass. I use masking tape to prevent the spray paint from going inside the glass, but you can also use plastic wrap.

100 Carol Heppner LLC Testors Valentine's Day cut masking tape

  • For one glass, I used a cutting tool and cutting mat to cut thin strips of the masking tape and applied it to the glass. You can use the masking tape to create your own unique painting design.

100 Carol Heppner LLC Testors Valentines Day Clear stem wrap

  • Follow the instructions on the Rust-Oleum spray paint to apply a coat Painters Touch 2X Ultra Cover Gloss Candy Pink on the upper part of the glass and then immediately apply the Gloss Berry Pink on the lower part of the glass. Use the Rust-Oleum Universal All Surface Aged Metallic Spray Paint to the stem of the wine glass. Applying the colors before each one has a chance to dry will help blend the colors.

100 Carol Heppner LLC Testors Valentine's Day wine glass gold stem

  • Once the paint has dried completely, gently remove the masking tape. Wait 24 hours before hand-washing the inside and unpainted areas of the glass.

Elevate Your Holiday Decor with Painted Wood Trees
By Carol Heppner LLC

Carol Heppner LLC Testors Christmas trees Hero Nov Dec 2023
‘Tis the season to unleash your artistic flair and add a touch of holiday magic to your decor. I mean, you will love these beautifully painted wooden trees. In this blog post, we are diving headfirst into a festive adventure, where we’ll be painting not one, but two charming 14.5-inch-tall wooden trees. You can find unfinished trees in various places online or white-painted trees in Christmas stores.

Our incredible sponsor in this creative Christmas journey is Testors as we use their amazing Testors Acrylic Craft Paints and Testors Gold Craft Enamel Paint Pen for amazing results.

The first tree is decorated in the vibrant hues of Christmas, a kaleidoscope of Engine Red, Avocado green, French Vanilla, Black and Gold. Colors that will transport you straight to Santa’s workshop. It is the kind of tree that will spread cheer from November through December, because, let’s face it, Christmas deserves an early start!

But wait, there is more! Our second tree will embrace the elegance of French Vanilla and beautiful Gold, shades that are as timeless as a shimmering, snowy winter’s eve. Testors Acrylic Gold Craft Paint really gives a luxurious look to the tree. This amazing tree can grace your space all winter long, from the post-holiday slump into the cozy heart of the season.

So, gather your supplies below and let’s embark on this tree-tastic adventure together!

Tree Preparation
The unfinished trees may need a little love before painting. Sandpaper or spackle can smooth rough surfaces. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to apply the spackle to the tree and sand the wood.

Remember creatives, when base coating wood surfaces, always paint with the grain of the wood.
When you are applying that fresh coat of paint on the raw wood, make sure your brush strokes follow the natural lines of the wood. This way, your paint job will look sleek and blend harmoniously with the wood’s grain. It is all about creating a beautiful, cohesive finish.

Carol Heppner LLC Testors Christmas tree multi color hero
Multi-Color Tree
Base coat the entire tree (yes, front, and back) with two coats of Testors Acrylic White Craft Paint, allowing the paint to dry between coats. Raw wood can be thirsty, so two coats of paint will ensure a better finish. Using a white base coat on this tree will help the red and green colors keep their bright shades.
Carol Heppner LLC Testors Christmas tree paint green red
Paint the bottom and top sections of the tree with the French Vanilla paint. Paint the remaining sections Red and green. Let the paint dry.

You can stop at this point and add the small, round beaded candle ring to the tree with a VELCRO® Brand Sticky Back Coin, or you can continue painting the tree using the following instructions.
Carol Heppner LLC Testors Christmas tree gold dots
Place the diamond stencil over the French Vanilla paint, secure it to the tree with the law-tack masking tape, and then use the stencil sponge to tap the Black paint onto the open areas of the stencil. Remove the stencil and let the paint dry.
Carol Heppner LLC Testors Christmas tree gold stencil on green
Place the floral stencils over the Engine Red and Avocado paints, secure the stencils to the tree with the low-tack masking tape, and then use the stencil sponge to tap the Gold paint onto the open areas of the stencils. Remove the stencils and let the paint dry.
Carol Heppner LLC Testors Christmas tree gold Paint pen
Apply the Gold Leafing Testors Craft Enamel Paint onto the white flat-backed beads while the beads are still attached to the backing paper. Let the paint dry and then secure the beads to the painted diamonds on the tree.
Carol Heppner LLC Testors Christmas tree gold tree Velcro
Cut one VELCRO® Brand Sticky Back Coin in half and use it to attach the small vanilla-beaded candle ring to the tree. Once Christmas has passed, you can remove this beaded candle ring and attach it to the French Vanilla and Gold Painted Tree.

French Vanilla and Gold Tree
Base coat the entire tree (yes — front, and back) with two coats of Testors Acrylic French Vanilla Craft Paint, allowing the paint to dry between coats. Again, raw wood can be thirsty, so two coats of paint will ensure a better finish.

Place the floral stencils over two sections of the tree and then secure the stencils to the tree with low-tack masking tape. Use the stencil sponge to tap the Gold paint onto the open areas of the stencil. Remove the stencil and let the paint dry.

Cut one VELCRO® Brand Sticky Back Coin in half and use it to attach the small, red-beaded candle ring to the tree. Once Christmas has passed, remove the red-beaded candle ring, and attach the vanilla-beaded candle ring to this tree.

Carol Heppner LLC Testors Thanksgiving napkin rings sponge gold

  • Next, apply Testors Craft Enamel Gold Paint Pen to the edge of the pumpkin.

Painting Leaves

I used three different painting methods to paint the solid wood leaves. You can experiment the different methods or just use one method.

Carol Heppner LLC Testors Thanksgiving napkin rings crystal charm

Waxed Paper Method

Carol Heppner LLC Testors Thanksgiving napkin rings waxed paper

  • Tear a piece of waxed paper that is slightly larger than the solid wood leaf. Apply Testors Craft Acrylic paints in Avocado, Sunshine, Metallic Gold, and Orange onto the waxed paper using a foam craft brush, ensuring full coverage of the entire paper.
  • Place the solid wood leaf on top of the painted waxed paper and press down on the leaf to transfer the paint. Remove the waxed paper and allow the paint to dry completely.
  • Next, apply Testors Craft Enamel Gold Paint Pen to the edge of the solid leaf. Let the paint dry. (More on using Testors Craft Enamel Gold Paint Pen below.)

Sponge Method

Carol Heppner LLC Testors Thanksgiving napkin rings add gold orange

  • Paint the solid wood leaf with Testors Craft Acrylic Avocado paint. While the paint is still wet, use a generic magic eraser sponge to gently dab Testors Craft Acrylic Sunshine, Metallic Gold, and Orange paints onto the leaf, creating a blend of colors. Let the paint dry.
  • Next, carefully apply Testors Craft Enamel Gold Paint Pen to the edge of the solid leaf. Allow the paint to dry.

Feathery Blend

Carol Heppner LLC Testors Thanksgiving napkin rings paint leaf

  • Paint the solid wood leaf with Testors Craft Acrylic Avocado paint. While the paint is still wet, use a soft-bristle craft brush to apply Testors Craft Acrylic Sunshine, Metallic Gold, and Orange paints onto the leaf, creating strips of colors.
  •  Next, carefully apply Testors Craft Enamel Gold Paint Pen to the edge of the solid leaf. Allow the paint to dry.

Add a Touch of Gold

Carol Heppner LLC Testors Thanksgiving napkin rings edge in gold

  • Once your painted wooden pieces are dry, it’s time to elevate them with a touch of gold. This is where the Testors Craft Enamel Gold Paint Pen comes into play. Shake the pen well and carefully outline the edges of the wooden cutouts and beads with the gold paint. It’s like giving them a subtle, professional look. Allow the gold paint to dry, which won’t take long, thanks to its fast-drying nature.

Carol Heppner LLC Testors Thanksgiving napkin rings pumpkin leather cord

  • You can apply more of the gold to the cutout pumpkin and leaf shapes to give a glimmer of gold to the napkin ring.

Bead Painting

Carol Heppner LLC Testors Thanksgiving napkin rings paint beads

  • Thread the beads onto a bamboo skewer. Some of the beads had openings that were too small for the skewer, so I placed a single bead at the tip of the skewer to paint it separately.
  • Paint 10 to 12 beads for each napkin ring with Testors Craft Acrylic Paints and let them dry completely.

Assemble Your Napkin Rings

Carol Heppner LLC Testors Thanksgiving napkin rings thread beads

  • Now, let’s put it all together! You can use brightly colored fabric ribbons or leather cording that can be found in the jewelry department of craft stores. Going for a more natural relaxed look? Use twine to assemble your napkin rings.
  • Trim the ribbon to approximately 12 inches. Alternatively, if you’re like me, you can string the beads onto the ribbon while it remains connected to the spool. I’ve noticed this reduces waste. I add a piece of tape to the end of the ribbon or twine and then cut the tape into a point to help guide it through the opening in the beads.

Carol Heppner LLC Testors Thanksgiving napkin rings tie knots

  • String the painted wooden beads onto the ribbon in a circular pattern. When you’ve added the desired number of beads to make your ring (10 to 12), make a tight knot with the ribbon. Make sure to leave some extra ribbon for threading through the wooden shapes and for tying a bow.
  • You can enhance the elegance and style of your project by attaching colorful crystals to either the ribbon or the wooden cutouts. These crystals are readily available in the jewelry section of craft stores. When affixing crystals to the wooden cutouts, ensure that you use a jewelry-specific adhesive to ensure proper adhesion.

  • Allow the paint to dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions provided on the can.

Paint the Background

Pro Tip:

When painting a multi-colored design on a surface, follow these steps for sharp and clean lines. Start by applying a base coat to the entire pail. Next, use low-tack masking tape to cover the lower third of the pail, ensuring a tight seal along the edges.

To prevent the new colored paint from seeping through the sealed edges of the base coat, brush a thin coat of the base paint over the lower edge of the masking tape. Allow it to dry completely before continuing. Now, you can confidently paint the area below the tape with your desired new color. Once the paint has dried completely, gently remove the masking tape to reveal a professionally finished design with crisp, well-defined edges. This method creates a polished and impressive result in your painting projects.

  • Mask off the lower third of the pail using low-tack masking tape, ensure the edges are properly sealed on the pail.
  • Brush a coat of Testors White Craft Acrylic Paint over the lower edge of the masking tape. Allow the paint to dry.
  • Apply a coat of Testors Sunshine Craft Acrylic Paint to the area below the masking tape. Let the paint dry completely. Then, remove the masking tape.
  • Mask off the area where you want to apply Testors Orange Craft Acrylic Paint. Paint the exposed area with the orange paint and let it dry completely. Remove the masking tape.
  • Cover the top area of the orange paint with low-tack masking tape. Apply a very thin line of orange paint over the top edge of the masking tape. Allow the paint to dry, and then paint the top of the pail with Testors White Craft Acrylic Paint. Let the paint dry completely before removing the masking tape.

Characters

Carol Heppner LLC Testors Halloween pails draw cat paint eyes white

  • Use a pencil or mechanical lead pencil to lightly sketch a cat, witch, or bat design in the center of the painted pail.
  • For the cat’s body, bat’s body and eyes, and the witch’s hat, cape, eyes, and mouth, use Testors Black Craft Acrylic Paint.
  • Paint the cat’s eyes using Testors Craft Black and Avocado Craft Acrylic Paints.
  • The witch’s dress is painted with Testors Paradise Craft Acrylic Paints, and her hair with Passion Fruit Craft Acrylic Paint.
  • Once the character is painted, I like to outline the edge of the character and add detailed lines with Testors® Craft Decorative Satin Black Paint Pen.
  • To add a touch of shine, use Rust-Oleum Imagine Craft & Hobby Gold Chrome Paint Pen to color the witch’s hat’s headband and star. You can also add dots between the Sunshine, Orange, and White background colors on each pail.

Each jewelry tray holder consists of three levels and two risers. The risers separate each level, so they need to be sturdy. The largest level serves as the base of the tray and each level gets progressively smaller with height. The different level components that I use consists of inexpensive dishes and bowls, gardening saucers, and candle dishes.

Carol Heppner LLC Testors Mothers day 3-Tiered jewelry tray Coral hero eMy favorite risers are the dessert glasses by Cooking Concepts, sold in a package of 3, that I found at the local dollar store. I have a few LED candle holders that also make great risers. When looking for risers, make sure they are sturdy and are wide enough to hold the different levels together.

The colors we use in this project are Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch® 2X Ultra Cover® Gloss Grape and Glass Coral Spray Paints, and Rust-Oleum Chalked Ultra Matte Paint in Linen White with the and Rust-Oleum Chalked Protective Topcoat in Matte Clear. There are other great Rust-Oleum colors to choose from. If you’re looking for the latest color trends, a great place to start is the Rust-Oleum website. You can find their latest color collection called “Color Watch 2023,” which features a range of hues that are predicted to be popular this year.

Valentine’s Day Celebration Kit

Carol Heppner LLC Testors valentines Crate Hero A

This Rust-Oleum sponsored project is a creative way to celebrate Valentine’s Day in style!

Valentine’s Day is that special day to celebrate your love and affection. For a truly memorable experience, create your own Valentine’s Celebration Kit. It is a terrific way to show you care, and it’s sure to be a unique and special experience for both you and your Valentine.

We will start with a plain wood crate and add some color to it using Testors Acrylic Craft Paints. Then, we will add a chalkboard to the front of the crate so you can add a special message for your loved one.

Rust-Oleum Imagine Craft & Hobby Gold Chrome and Rose Pearl Paint Pens are a wonderful way to add a distinctive touch to wine glasses and coasters. The paint pens are easy to use and make it fun to create beautiful and unique glassware and coasters. These heart-painted glasses hold a little surprise. The front of the glass shows a Rose Pearl finish, while the inside of the glass reveals golden hearts. The pink pearl finish on the outside of the glass coupled with the golden hearts on the inside creates an elegant and unique look.

Make sure not to paint the top area of the glass where your lips touch the glass. Once the paint has cured on the glass, hand wash the glasses. Do not place the glasses in a dishwasher.

Transforming Dollar Store mini hearts into wine glass charms are a wonderful way to continue the Gold and Rose Pearl color theme. This is a fun and cost-effective project that anyone with some basic crafting skills can do.

Painting drink coasters can be a creative and fun activity. Rust-Oleum Imagine Craft & Hobby Gold Chrome and Rose Pearl Paint Pens make it so easy. The Rust-Oleum Imagine Craft & Hobby Triple Thick Glaze Top Coat provides a durable finish to protect your handiwork. It is important to follow the manufacturer’s product instructions to provide the best results.

We will also paint a wooden heart from the dollar store that is used as a beautiful decoration for a cellophane-wrapped desert of your choice.

Let’s get started!

Christmas Countdown DIY

Carol Heppner LLC RO Christmas Hero for BlogLet’s countdown to Christmas
with these fun holiday DIY ideas!

Sponsored by Rust-Oleum®

There are two trends that I am seeing this holiday season. The first trend is handcrafted countdown to Christmas decorations. The second trend is nutcrackers. Unfinished wood nutcrackers are popping up in craft stores and home improvement stores. These unpainted nutcrackers allow you to create a customized nutcracker to fit your holiday theme. You can also paint them in school or sports team colors and give them as gifts to family and friends.

The Gold Chrome, IMAGINE CRAFT & HOBBY Chrome Paint Pen by Rust-Oleum give the nutcracker, the countdown blocks, and the countdown sign a professional look. The Chrome Paint Pen gives a bright and reflective finish to the projects. It has a dual tip that makes it easy to paint different objects. I used the chisel tip for the edges on the blocks and sign, while I used the bullet tips and chisel tip on the nutcracker. Adding a gold touch to the edges of the blocks and sign gives them a polished look.

Testors Craft Acrylic Paints provide wonderful coverage and brilliant colors. The Avocado and Engine Red colors give a fresh feel to the traditional Christmas colors. I based coated all the wood with Testors Craft Acrylic white paint. Because the wood was unfinished, it needed two coats. Base coating with white paint allows the green and red colors stay true and bright.

The nutcracker I decided to paint already had its face painted and hair attached. That way, I only had to concentrate on painting the body. I decorated his hat with jewelry chains and embellishments from earlier projects.

Let’s get crafting!

Thanksgiving Textured Footed-Bowl Centerpiece

Carol Heppner LLC Testors Thanksgiving HeroCottagecore remains a popular interior-design aesthetic this Thanksgiving. Warm white colors and textured home-decor accessories are trendy this fall. This sponsored project by Rust-Oleum® is a great way to bring this attractive style into your home.

I visited my local dollar store to find the elements needed to create a footed bowl. The glass Roman urn candle holder turned upside down makes the perfect base for the bowl. The painted Textured Footed Bowl is not food-safe, so it is only used as a centerpiece.

While I purchased the plastic Floral Garden “Garden Dish,” to create the Painted Textured Footed Bowl, you can use a glass dish from the store. The sides of the dish will not be as deep (tall) as the “Garden Dish.” The Textured Footed Bowl is not food safe. However, if you paint a glass dish, you can use a second food-safe dish on top of the first painted dish.

Painted Halloween Friends

Carol Heppner LLC Testors Halloween Outside 1

Getting excited for Halloween? Me too! One of the top Halloween trends this year is “more cute and less creepy.” This fun project sponsored by Testors and Rust-Oleum® lets you tap into that “cute” trend.

Universal Bonding Primer by Rust-Oleum® firmly bonds to different surfaces and allows Testors Acrylic Craft Paints to adhere to the galvanized metal surface used in this project. Priming the surface helps keep the decorative paints on the surface for a long time. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the spray can for the best results. And, if you are going to have children participating in this project, it is best that an adult uses the Bonding Primer and let the children decorate the galvanized bottle caps after they are primed and dried.

While I used oversized galvanized metal bottle caps from the dollar store to create these wall hangings, you can use larger pie pans, pizza pans, or wood circles to get the same great Halloween look.

The wings for the bat are created with aluminum step flashing, found in the roofing department of home improvement supply stores. The aluminum step flashing is cut easily with craft scissors. You can, however, use black foam sheets found in craft stores to create the wings. You will need to find a glue that works with metal and foam to attach the foam sheet wing to the galvanized metal bottle cap.

If you are going to use the Painted Halloween Friends outdoors, you may like to spray a coat of Painter’s Touch 2X Ultra Cover Clear Spray to protect them from the outdoor elements. This step is not necessary if they will be displayed indoors.

While they were designed to hang on a door or wall, the Painted Halloween Friends can also be in centerpieces. Do not use them for food items because they are not food safe.

Summer Garden Accessories

Beige Photo Collage Blog About Visual Content Instagram Stories (1)

Warm summer days mean that we are spending more time outdoors, including in our backyards. Whether you have a full-sized backyard or a small apartment balcony, these fun DIY projects sponsored by Testors and Rust-Oleum® help brighten your space.  While you can purchase new metal or terracotta containers, you may have older planters, metal vases, and watering cans that can be renewed with these instructions.

Designer’s Notes:

  • Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the spray cans. This will help you achieve the best results.
  • The metal watering can, metal vase, and terracotta planters are first primed with Rust-Oleum® Stops Rust® Universal Bonding Primer. This helps the decorative paints adhere to the surface.
  • The three terracotta planters and saucer used one can of the primer because the planters are very porous and absorbed the paint. If you are going to use live plants in the terracotta planters, they first need to be sealed on the inside as well as the outside. Otherwise, the outside paint will eventually flake off.
  • While the metal watering can, metal vase, and terracotta planters are decorated for summer, you can change the embellishments on each of the items to work with any season or holiday. You can use a piece of low-tack masking tape on the container and then use hot glue to attach the embellishment to the masking tape. Using the masking tape allows for the quick removal of the embellishment from the surface. The jute rope and sea stars were attached using this method.
  • Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when working with hot glue.
  • Use a yogurt container as a stand for a terracotta planter by spraying it with the Rust-Oleum® Stops Rust® Universal Bonding Primer. Once the primer is dry, spray the primed-yogurt container with the Rust-Oleum® Caribbean Sand Multicolor Textured Spray Paint.
