Open to any child in Grade 3 through 6, the CodeSprouts Spring 2022 Coding Club strives to teach kids fundamental computer programming concepts and help them create their own code.
Our goal is to nurture their awareness and interest in technology -- not only as something they can use, but as a tool to create and build, using imagination, creativity and inventiveness. Students will learn computer science concepts and practice computer programming with lessons and exercises using effective environments such as
code.org,
scratch.mit.edu, and
p5js.org.
The club leader, Michael O'Connell, has been leading Coding Clubs for the past several years at Binford (which was profiled in the MCCSC Newsletter -- see
http://bit.ly/CodingClub-MCCSCNewsletter), Childs, and University Elementary, and has led coding sessions and camps at other schools including St. Charles and Rogers Elementary, at Monroe County Public Library, and in person and online with students in other states as well as in Asia. He has spent many years working with employers such as IBM helping people learn and use computer science and technology and coding-related tools and languages.
