Help Darley Abbey Scouts Save Their Hall

Darley Abbey Scouts urgently need your help please. The Hall where they meet is under threat. If they lose the Hall then the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts that make up 63rd Derby Scout Group will lose their Hall and the Scout Group will cease to exist as there are no other suitable and available venues in the village.

The History

The 63rd Derby Scout Group can trace their history back to 1927which makes them one of Derby’s oldest scout groups. Since they formed many people’s lives have been positively influenced by their existence and today more than 60 children are members of 63rd Derby Beavers, Cubs and Scout groups.

The Hall

The groups meet in what was previously the Methodist Hall in Darley Abbey. Back in 2014 the Methodists decided to merge their Darley Abbey congregation with that in Allestree, which meant they no longer needed the building. The options for the Methodists at the time were twofold; sell to a developer or to the Scout Group. After much deliberation and consideration of the alternative options the 63rd Derby Scout Group decided to buy the Hall with loans provided by the Methodist church and the Scout Association Trust Corporation.

How the money is being raised

Since 2015 the scout groups have been undertaking a wide range of fundraising activities to help pay for the Hall. Events including; Field Days, Quiz Nights, a Fashion show and supermarket bag packing have been successful in raising funds.

The Hall is also rented out for much of the ti
me when it is not being used by the scout groups. During weekdays the Hall is hired by a Community group who provide a support service foryoung adults with autism and learning disabilities. At evenings and weekends the Hall is hired for family events and groups (such as a local diabetes support group) choose to meet there. A local pantomime group is currently using the Hall as rehearsal space.

In addition to fundraising and revenue from renting the Hall the group benefit from donations. This is where you can help to save the Hall. Any amount that you’re able to donate would be very much appreciated.

More than a Scouts Hall – a resource for the whole community

Darley Abbey Scouts Hall is so much more than a Scouts Hall. It is a vital resource for the local community. It is located in the old part of the village, just behind the Abbey pub building which was part of the original Augustinian Abbey. If we are not able to save it for the village, the site will be bought by developers who will build homes on it and a vital community resource and our Scout Group will be lost.

Please give what you can.
