Latest Monthly statistics on Learning Disabilities and Autism (LDA) from the Assuring Transformation collection and MHSDS collection.
This publication brings together the LDA data from the Assuring Transformation collection and the LDA service specific statistics from the Mental Health Statistics Data Set (MHSDS).
There are differences in the inpatient figures between the MHSDS and AT data sets and work is underway to better understand these. NHS Digital plans to publish additional monthly comparator data from this work in future publications. The MHSDS LDA data are currently labelled experimental as they are undergoing evaluation. Further information on the quality of these statistics is available in the Data Quality section of the main report. It is planned that the MHSDS will become the sole source of inpatient LDA data in the future, replacing Assuring Transformation.
There is a slight difference in scope between the two data collections. The MHSDS data is from providers based in England and includes care provided in England but may be commissioned outside England. Whereas the Assuring Transformation data are provided by English commissioners and healthcare will typically be provided in England but also includes data on care commissioned in England and provided elsewhere in the UK.
The release comprises:
Assuring Transformation Publication: This statistical release published by NHS Digital makes available the most recent data relating to patients with learning disabilities and/or autistic spectrum disorder receiving inpatient care commissioned by the NHS in England
MHSDS LDA Publication: This publication provides statistics relating to NHS funded secondary mental health, learning disabilities and autism services in England. These statistics are derived from submissions made using version 3.0 of the Mental Health Services Dataset (MHSDS). Prior to May 2018 the LDA service specific statistics were included in the main MHSDS publication.
Each publication consists of the following documents:
•A report which presents England level analysis of key measures.
•An excel reference data tables showing data as reported and total patient counts. For AT these are retrospectively updated from March 2015 onwards. This includes some further cross-tabulations of the data.
•A monthly CSV file which presents key measures at England level.
•A metadata file to accompany the CSV file, which provides contextual information for each measure.
An easy read version of both main reports highlighting key findings in an easy-to-understand way.

The AT reference data file was replaced on 9 October 2018 to correct some minor rounding errors in Table 25. All other tables have remained the same.
Key Facts
ASSURING TRANSFORMATION
Data collected for LDA inpatients at the end of August 2018 show that:
· 2,375 inpatients were in hospital at the end of the reporting period.
· More inpatients were discharged (150) than admitted (120) to hospitals. Out of the 150 inpatients were discharged/ transferred from hospital in August 2018, 95 (64 percent) were discharged back into the community.
· Many inpatients have been in hospital for a long time. Of those in hospital at the end of August 2018, 1,390 (59 percent) had a total length of stay of over 2 years.
· At the end of August 2018 around half of the inpatients 1,215 (51 percent) were in a non-secure ward. There were 1,155 (49 percent) inpatients in a secure ward.
· The largest proportion of inpatients (49 percent) were aged between 18-34 (1,165) and the lowest proportion (1 percent) were aged 65 and over (35).
· There were more males (1,740) than females (625) in hospital this month (73 percent were male).
· There were 120 admissions to hospital; of these 65 were first admissions, 25 were readmissions and 30 were transfers from other hospitals within a year of the previous discharge.
· Under half of the inpatients last had a review of their care over 6 months ago (1,045 people).
· Over half of the inpatients have a date planned for them to leave hospital (1,420).
· Approximately 40 percent of inpatients in hospital in August 2018 travelled over 50km
MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES DATASET: LEARNING DISABILITY AND AUTISM STATISTICS
Data collected for LDA inpatients at the end of June 2018 show that:
· There were 3,635 people with learning disabilities and/ or autistic spectrum disorders in hospital.
· There were 173,125 referrals for people with learning disabilities and autism (LDA).
Of these inpatients:
· 1,300 (36 percent) had been in hospital for over 2 years.
· 165 (5 percent) had a delayed discharge.
· The largest proportion (45 percent) were aged between 18-34 (1,620).
· The lowest proportion (5 percent) were aged under 18 (190).
· 71 percent were male (2,590) and 29 percent were female (1,040).
Findings based on ward stays data:
· The majority were in a learning disabilities ward (45 percent), followed by an adult mental health ward (36 percent).
· 1,665 (46 percent) were in a secure setting. 1,855 (51 percent) were in a non-secure setting.
· 555 (15 percent) travelled over 50km from home to get to the hospital for care or treatment.
