Over 200 former students are set to return to Nottingham to re-live their past sporting glory this weekend at the second Alumni Sports Challenge Weekend, supported by Instant Impact Interns.
The weekend will see a series of matches between past and present students from The University of Nottingham, who will be battling it out across 12 different sports to secure the Alumni Challenge Trophy on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 June.
After a convincing win for the graduates in the inaugural competition last year, Nottingham alumni will once again travel from across the globe to play in what promises to be a true festival of sport.
Basketball player and Engineering graduate Yusuf Mohammed who played in the team of 2006 and who returned last year said: “While we were studying at Nottingham it was basketball that first brought us together and it’s really great that it still continues to do so now.
“Revisiting Nottingham has become an annual occurrence for us. It is a great way to catch up with old team mates based all over the world, with some players coming from as far afield as Germany and Lithuania. It’s also interesting to see how much has changed at the University and how much has stayed the same.
“The event seems to be getting bigger and bigger with double the amount of teams to last year and everyone vying for bragging rights as to which year the team was best. Personally, although I might be biased, I think the 2005-2006 basketball team was pretty good.”
Sporting impact
Former Tennis Club President Alice Currie (English Studies Graduate 2011) will also be returning to take part in the weekend and is delighted that her employers Instant Impact Interns will be sponsoring the event.
She said: “It's great to see alumni and sporting networks encouraged as students often forget how important these will be after graduation. Only since working in recruitment have I realised just how valuable involvement with a sports club can be for personal development. As a member of a committee you develop practical, transferable skills relevant to the world of work that are sought after by employers.
“I have no doubt that this event will provide a great opportunity for students to meet their predecessors and catch up with old friends who are now working across a wide spectrum of jobs and professions all over the world. At Instant Impact Interns we hope to continue to support and develop a relationship with this fantastic annual sporting event.”
In addition to basketball and tennis, the weekend will also see the best of the University’s past badminton, cricket, football, hockey, lacrosse, netball, sailing, softball and taekwondo teams take on the current sides, before the weekend culminates with an Ice Hockey match to be played at Nottingham Ice Arena on Sunday evening.
